Every month, teachers are encouraged to sign up for 15 minute read aloud time in which I am able to bring along one of our donated books for reading and discussion time. \r\n\r\nIn these past few months, students ages 4 to 11 have been able to witness how two cousins cross the US-Mexico border to visit each other in their hometowns, comparing their similarities despite their geological locations (My Town, Mi Pueblo). They've had the opportunity to learn about the history and significance of frybread (Frybread) and about an 8 year old who's passion for skin color representation propelled her to advocate for skin color crayons of varying shades (More Than Peach). 5th grade students have been able to connect their education on the importance of water filtration systems with the native efforts in water advocacy (We Are Water Protectors). Students have felt empowered to ask their families questions about their heritage (Where are You From?) and to seek insight on the meaning of their family names (Alma and How She Got Her Name). In particular, a 1st grade student enthusiastically sought me out to share that she'd investigated where her last name originated from and what her first name means, just like Alma.\r\n\r\nThis collection of books have helped introduce our students to take in new perspectives and insights; it has allowed for their curiosity and understanding to grow.
