We will be raising Steelhead eggs in our classrooms. This is done through the Sonoma County Department of Fish and Wildlife. We will have eggs delivered to our classroom, raise them until the "fry" stage of their lifecycle, and release them into Dry Creek near the Sonoma Hatchery. The students will learn about the steelhead life cycle, their habitat, the dangers they face in their journey in and out of our local Russian River, the relationship between keeping our rivers clean and species survival, and become an active part of maintaining our local river's steelhead population. Many of our students rarely get out of Santa Rosa, let alone see the beauty of this country and our amazing local steelhead in its native habitat. It is an experience that this up and coming generation needs. Being able to contribute to something bigger than themselves is an experience that can change the mindset of our youth. The $365.61 is the cost of our bus to get up to the hatchery at Lake Sonoma from our school in Santa Rosa. Your help would allow the two classes to continue this amazing tradition here at Roseland Elementary. This project will really help to enhance the curriculum I am teaching this year. Teaching a life cycle with videos and worksheets is one thing, but watching it happen, releasing a species into it's natural habitat, feeding the next stage of steelhead before they get released into the creek to make their journey out to the Pacific Ocean, watching scientists spawn 20+ lb live steelhead in their lab at the hatchery, and then watching the same fish spawn naturally 10ft away in the creek that they are releasing our classroom raised fish into, is an experience that can't be matched while sitting in the classroom. Thank you!
