Working with the Pre-K population and their families allows me to help build a strong foundation for meaningful communication through play-based learning. In today's world, we have seen that rapid technological advancement does not always translate into meaningful communication for the students we serve. For many minimally speaking children, intentional guidance and the right tools are essential. A key part of my role is training families and collaborating with professionals to use resources that support communication development, particularly through augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and speech-generating devices.\r\n\r\nEarly in my journey working in a special education school, I closely observed experienced speech therapists and witnessed the powerful impact AAC devices had on students. These tools helped children create meaningful moments of communication with their peers and teachers. Four years later, it feels both surreal and deeply fulfilling to now be leading these team-based efforts to support children's communication using AAC. Unfortunately, current district funding limitations make it difficult for therapists to obtain devices to model and trial communication apps with students. Because of your generosity through DonorsChoose, I now have access to a device that allows me to model communication strategies directly with my students. While consultations from outside professionals can take months, having my own device enables immediate support and instruction, and we have already seen remarkable progress in just a few months.\r\n\r\nSpeech-generating devices provide auditory feedback that gives students many opportunities to learn vocabulary, especially core words. Core words are a small set of words used most frequently in everyday communication and make up about 80% of what we say throughout the day. These words allow students to request, comment, ask questions, share opinions, exchange information, and build social relationships. A communication device such as an iPad equipped with appropriate AAC applications provides both visual and auditory support, helping students practice communication across different environments and with different communication partners.\r\n\r\nOne student who has greatly benefited from access to a speech-generating device is Zoe, a four-year-old who has attended Pre-K at RoseHill for the past two years. Zoe was previously minimally speaking, but through consistent exposure to core vocabulary, unit-based words, and meaningful communication phrases during therapy sessions, she has made incredible progress. During play and learning activities, Zoe now imitates words and comments using the device, allowing her to participate more actively with peers and teachers. Watching her expressive language grow has been an incredible reminder of the difference these tools can make in a child's life.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has made a direct and meaningful impact on my students. Because of your support, children like Zoe now have greater access to communication, connection, and learning opportunities. Thank you for helping give my students a stronger voice.","fullyFundedDate":1759279416358,"projectUrl":"project/fund-bilingual-speech-therapy-resources/9750764/","projectTitle":"Fund Bilingual Speech Therapy Resources in the Bronx!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kathy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10275348_orig.png?crop=674,674,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758593416424","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10275348"},{"teacherId":8007134,"projectId":9931107,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping bring our Me Museum project to life. The tools we use help students learn by giving them visual models, interactive practice, and immediate feedback. For many of our learners especially those who benefit from repetition or hands‑on engagement technology makes lessons more accessible and helps them stay focused and motivated.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about the new product is how interactive it is. They love being able to touch, move, and explore content in ways that feel like play. The bright visuals, simple controls, and quick responses keep them engaged, and they often show more confidence when they can learn through technology.\r\n\r\nWe've already seen certain students connect strongly with this new tool. Some who are usually quiet or hesitant have become more willing to participate because the technology gives them a clear, supportive way to respond. Your support has had an immediate and meaningful impact on our students' daily learning experiences, providing them with a space that is both welcoming and purposeful.\r\n\r\nThe reading bench has quickly become a favorite spot in our classroom. For our preschoolers, having a comfortable and clearly defined place to sit while exploring books makes a significant difference. Many of our students benefit from structured yet cozy environments, and the bench offers exactly that. It invites children to slow down, feel supported, and fully engage with books in a way that feels safe and enjoyable. We have already observed increased interest in reading, longer attention spans, and more frequent independent book exploration.\r\n\r\nIn addition to supporting literacy development, the reading bench plays an important role in our students' social-emotional growth. Surrounding the bench are bins with visual supports connected to our classroom mood meter. These visuals help students identify and label their emotions, an essential skill for young learners with developing communication abilities. Alongside these visuals, we provide carefully selected books focused on emotions, self-awareness, and feelings. This combination allows students to connect stories to their own experiences in a concrete and meaningful way.\r\n\r\nThe bench area also includes objects designed to assist with self-regulation, such as sensory tools and calming materials. Many of our students seek physical comfort and sensory input to help manage emotions and transitions throughout the day. The reading bench offers a calm space where students can regroup, regulate, and return to learning feeling more confident and ready to engage. This has been especially beneficial during moments of frustration, overstimulation, or emotional overwhelm.\r\n\r\nYour donation has helped create an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported. The reading bench is more than just a piece of furniture; it is a space where students build a love for books, practice emotional regulation, and experience success at their own pace. It supports both academic and emotional development while reinforcing the idea that learning can be comforting, joyful, and accessible.\r\n\r\nWe are deeply grateful for your generosity and belief in our students. Your contribution has enhanced our classroom in ways that will continue to benefit children for years to come. For many of these young learners, verbal communication is still developing or can be challenging to use consistently. Music offers an alternative form of expression that feels natural, engaging, and accessible. Through sound, rhythm, and movement, students are able to communicate emotions, ideas, and needs in ways that words alone may not yet allow.\r\n\r\nThe donated instruments have expanded access to meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. Instruments such as drums, shakers, bells, xylophones, and rhythm sticks invite students to participate at their own developmental level. Children learn cause and effect by tapping, shaking, or striking an instrument and hearing an immediate response. This direct feedback supports cognitive development while strengthening fine and gross motor skills. For preschoolers with learning disabilities, multisensory experiences are especially impactful, reinforcing learning through touch, sound, and movement simultaneously.","fullyFundedDate":1766008300066,"projectUrl":"project/music-opens-doors/9859750/","projectTitle":"Music Opens Doors","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Betancourt","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6884215_orig.jpg?crop=494,494,x0,y64&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1708256515953","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6884215"},{"teacherId":7478045,"projectId":9970066,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of an iPad and protective case for my classroom. Your support has made an immediate and meaningful impact on my students' learning experience.\r\n\r\nWhile many people use technology at home for communication or entertainment, this iPad is being used as a powerful learning tool. Students use it for interactive educational apps, communication apps, reading digital texts, and practicing skills at their own pace. The touch screen and visual features help make lessons more engaging and accessible, especially for students who benefit from hands-on or visual learning. It has allowed me to differentiate instruction more easily and provide targeted support to students who need it most.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students most about this new technology is how interactive and responsive it is. They love being able to manipulate content directly on the screen, receive instant feedback, and explore learning in a way that feels modern and fun. The iPad has increased student motivation and focus, and students are eager for opportunities to use it.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially warmed to this new technology. I have students who are non-speaking or minimally speaking and this device gives them a way to communicate without using spoken language. It also helps them to show their understanding in new ways, which has been incredibly empowering for them. My students use AAC and visual-based apps to record short messages, build visual communication boards, and create digital social stories which helps peers, staff, and families learn how to communicate with non-speaking children.\r\n\r\nA big thank you to The Allstate Foundation for funding this project! Children take turns exploring sounds by tapping, shaking, and ringing the instruments while counting beats together. The class then plays along to a familiar song, practicing rhythm and listening skills as a group. The lesson ends with children sharing how the music made them feel, building confidence and language skills.\r\nWith these tools, young children will explore rhythm, melody, and creative expression through active, sensory-rich play throughout the school year. Engaging with the instruments helps build fine motor skills, coordination, and self-confidence while encouraging experimentation and joy in learning.
