The muddy trails are perfect locations for spotting animal tracks. The rain brings native plants out of summer dormancy, and with that brings a fresh supply of food for herbivores. With the uptick in food, this also means there's an increase in animal scat that we discover along the way. These pieces of evidence tell a remarkable story of life in the refuge, but it is rare that we get to observe the animals directly. Most of the local wildlife is nocturnal or crepuscular, putting their active period outside of our class window. Any remaining animals are quick to scurry away as 28 rambunctious middle schoolers barrel down the trail. \r\n\r\nThe addition of trail cameras opened opportunities to observe animals in their native environment, 24 hours a day. Students began by exploring an area off trail that they thought would have the highest likelihood of recording an animal. Students searched for burrows, locations with lots of animal tracks, or sheltered areas under bushes that contained feathers or bones. Based on these factors, students decided where the cameras should be located (see attached photographs). The cameras were placed in early December, and will record through our school's winter break. We will gather recorded data in mid January. Early results are promising–the cameras have already picked up a variety of local birds and mammals (see attached photographs for trail camera images).\r\n\r\nThis project has also gained the attention of US Fish and Wildlife. As the protector of the refuge, they regulate the area and received our recording permits. They are equally interested in seeing our students engage with the local environment in this unique way. I look forward to working with them in this capacity moving forward. \r\n\r\nThese trail cameras have checked so many boxes: high student engagement, cooperation with local agencies, and most importantly, students are doing real science. Every time an animal walks in front of a camera, it's one more data point that can be graphed. This data can be analyzed and interpreted, and students can come to scientific conclusions.
