They use \"switches\", or buttons, to activate the toys that they received. Check out the pictures attached to see a student pressing a switch to activate a bubble making machine that was donated.\r\n\r\nOur students with neurological visual impairments require light-based intervention to help them process visual information. Light tubes and other sensory equipment is helping them receive what they need to engage with their world and learn.\r\n\r\nYour donation has already made a huge difference in our lives here at NYCDOE Hospital Schools. That's where these books have been such a gift — they give students a chance to read for pleasure while naturally strengthening their decoding and comprehension skills.\r\nReading in our hospital classroom looks different from a typical school setting. Some children curl up with a book on their own, while others enjoy reading aloud together. When we read together, I'll pause to ask comprehension questions and talk through the story with them. It's a wonderful way to keep their minds active while also creating meaningful connection and calm during the day.\r\nSeveral students have especially loved the Babysitters Club series. They're drawn into the stories and characters, often asking if they can borrow a book to keep by their bedside. Sometimes a student will read two or three books during one hospital stay! You have improved the life of my students by providing a crucial tool to doing a group activity that gives back to others in their community. \r\n\r\nBecause of you donation, my students have started to make slime (also known as oobleck), which is a fun sensory toy that students tend to really enjoy. It provides both a visual and tactile experience, and is very helpful for sensory integration. Sensory integration is basically taking different individual sensory realms (site, sound, etc.), and making it so that the brain integrates all of these sensations in a way that is cohesive. Many of my students have sensory integration challenges, which leads to daily experiences, such as feeling hunger, to lead to intense sensation that is difficult to process, causing a lot of pain and discomfort. So via this activity, you are helping my students wellness as they can experience more pleasant things throughout the day. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, you are helping other students in our hospital community. After making the slime, my students then give it to other students who have to stay in their beds due to their condition.
