My 6th through 8th grade English Language Learners now have the tools and confidence to become interviewers, producers, and storytellers through our new student podcast, What the Westies.\r\n\r\nThey are now researching STEM careers, writing invitation letters, and interview questions to engineers, doctors, and environmental researchers here in New York City. These conversations make academic vocabulary real and meaningful as students investigate, predict, and collaborate in authentic ways.\r\n\r\nAlready, I am seeing students who are usually quiet speak with confidence behind a microphone. This project is helping my ENL students see new possibilities for who they can become.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has made all of this possible. Thank you for investing in my students, their voices, and their futures. This is my first year at this school, and it has already been such a positive change! The principal even trusted me and my English language learners to coordinate the election of a new school mascot. What an honor!\r\n\r\nOf course, I couldn't name our new podcast without a mascot! It was a close election between The Mavericks and The Westies (a nod to our Upper West Side location). The button maker will be perfect now that we have the results. And the winner is... The Westies!\r\n\r\nMy ELL students will announce the results to the school the day after real Election Day. After that, we'll dive into designing a logo and creating buttons featuring our new mascot and podcast name to build excitement. The large Post-it posters (they're so expensive, but make a huge difference in our projects) have already been invaluable for my ELLs who are learning in a small group with me and then presenting their work to their classrooms using the posters. \r\n\r\nThank you again for making all of this possible!","fullyFundedDate":1758899247731,"projectUrl":"project/tools-for-tackling-tough-texts/9576349/","projectTitle":"Tools for Tackling Tough Texts","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Patterson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1735368_orig.png?crop=271,271,x116,y113&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755697439072","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kpatterson"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_99","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":439,"numTeachers":50,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":34,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":35,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"8.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.2,"schoolId":99,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 333 Manhattan School for Children on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 333 Manhattan School for Children","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-333-manhattan-school-for-chldn/99"}
