Reading the news each day, along with thinking about federal and state budgets and the ways that funding trickles down to programs like student support, can make folks in our roles feel disillusioned and exacerbate feelings of burnout or isolation. To have the support from a total stranger, willing to go out of your way to give us such an incredibly significant and meaningful gift... it really goes beyond words. \r\n\r\nAnother layer of impact is, of course, on the individual students that I work with. A lot of the materials that you purchased for us are specifically for our students in special education, many of whom really struggle to express their emotions. Especially when overstimulated or overwhelmed, they can become nonverbal. With these different options for self-expression and identification of their emotions, they have been able to greatly benefit by having an outlet and different mediums to communication themselves. \r\n\r\nBeyond the individuals who actually receive counseling with me, there are the students who access walk-in crisis supports, many of whom are general education students dealing with mental health concerns or other stressors that affect them while they're at school. Several of my students come to school without proper winter clothing, so receiving warm hats, gloves, and scarves meant they could go outside comfortably and safely during the cold months. The blankets have also been wonderful for providing comfort and warmth when students need a moment to relax and feel secure during the school day.\r\n\r\nThe snacks and speech prizes have become powerful motivators during our speech sessions. Students eagerly participate in activities, practice their communication skills, and work toward their goals knowing there is encouragement and a small reward waiting for their hard work.\r\n\r\nWhen the boxes arrived and the students saw everything that had been donated, their reactions were priceless. They were so excited and truly thrilled. Many students immediately picked out hats or mittens and proudly put them on. The floor lamps give off warm lighting around the classroom creating a welcoming and calm environment. They have also helped decrease headaches from the harsh fluorescent lights. The standing desk has been a game changer! Students are able to stand when feeling too wiggly to work at their desk but also it provides a place to utilize the interactive white board's keyboard. No longer are we awkwardly trying to hold and type on the keyboard while also looking at the screen. It also served as a sign in station during Parent Teacher conferences!\r\nMy students and I use the new dry erase boards daily whether we are solving math problems, practicing spelling words or composing sentences. \r\nIt's the little things that help create a peaceful and functional classroom that is conducive to learning and you have helped provide that!
