My students are artistically gifted tenth graders who learn 35mm darkroom photography as a part of their Visual Art Curriculum over the course of 20 weeks. My program is ONLY course of its kind in the Buffalo Public Schools. It is a rigorous course designed to create autonomous photographers who learn how to use the camera as an art-making tool. Students will be able to conceptualize, compose, shoot, develop, enlarge, print, and display their photography for their grade level art show. My students enter my course having no knowledge of formal photography and leave as fully-functioning, adept photographers. The work they produce and the confidence they gain using the camera and darkroom is the pride of my professional life.
