I have taught Special Education at the Buffalo Academy for Visual & Performing Arts for 10 years. This group comes with a considerable amount of challenges. This class is the first class that when I told them how much I enjoyed what we accomplish in class, I was met with surprise from them. They told me that many teachers in the past "hated" them. They are a challenging group (educationally & behaviorally) when given the opportunity to shine along with some encouragement, they can and will be successful. My students are learning & reading on a considerably low level. These students have one wish- to get a diploma which ends up seeming very unattainable due to the high demands. This class comes from a background where there is not much interest placed in education & many have so much to worry about that goes on outside of school, being interested in daily subjects becomes the least of their worries.
