Students are using their digital design skills to create logos, graphics, and promotional materials, then using the button maker to turn those designs into actual products. It has helped them better understand the full marketing process—from identifying a target audience and creating a brand to producing and distributing a finished promotional item.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students is definitely seeing their designs become something they can actually hold! There is a huge difference between creating a graphic on a computer and watching that same design become a finished button. They love being able to create something that looks professional and can be used for school events, organizations, campaigns, and other marketing projects.\r\n\r\nSome of my students who may not always be the first to participate in a traditional lesson have especially warmed up to this technology. The hands-on production process gives them another way to be creative and contribute to a team. Students have quickly become interested in learning how the machine works, helping classmates with designs, and experimenting with what makes a button visually appealing. Rather than sitting back passively, my students were eager to volunteer, raise their hands, and dive into problem-solving for a chance to earn a treat.\r\n\r\nWe integrated the snack incentives into an interactive review game where my students worked in turn-and-talk partner pairs on multi-step math problems. To earn a snack, student pairs had to not only arrive at the correct answer, but also present and explain their mathematical reasoning to the rest of the class. One particularly memorable moment occurred when one of my students, who typically hesitates to participate or speak up in front of peers, volunteered to go up to the board. After learning the five stages of Design Thinking—Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test—students were given real-world problems to solve. Instead of simply writing about what a prototype might look like, they used the LEGO materials to actually build one. They had to think about the needs of their customer, develop a solution, and turn their idea into something tangible that they could explain and improve.\r\n\r\nThe students were so excited when they first saw the materials. The second the LEGOs came out, the energy in the classroom completely changed! Students who may not always be the first to participate in a traditional lesson immediately started building, experimenting, changing their ideas, and talking through their solutions. It was a great reminder that learning does not always have to look like a worksheet or notes. Giving students something they could physically create made the Design Thinking process much more meaningful and memorable.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will continue applying these skills to entrepreneurship, marketing, and project-based learning. They will take what they learned from prototyping and begin thinking more critically about how businesses identify customer problems, develop solutions, collect feedback, and improve their products or services.
