Flake books for our 7th grade classes! I was eager to choose a book that I believed would tackle realistic and timely issues that I've seen my middle schoolers struggle with and this text was it! Not only did it touch on real problems that exist in their neighborhood and school, but it did so in an accessible tone and dialect that made it feel familiar from the first page.\r\n\r\nMany students that I did not know had reading confidence stepped up to read aloud in class together! We sat in circles and \"popcorn\" read, meaning that each student had to pay attention to the text because it might be their turn to read next. The strong readers who loved to read took turns and encouraged those students who have never read in class before. The informal dialect and middle school characters seemed close to their own experiences with bullying, fitting in and loving yourself as you are.\r\n\r\nWe were so excited to get the texts and jump right in this school year; most students chose to demonstrate their understanding of the text with a one-pager final project, which I will share photos of. Others wrote alternative endings or revised scenes that they'd wished had been different in the text. Seeing them engaged and connected to the text was a wonderful experience and gives our class confidence in ourselves! This means our students have more chances to interact with donors and take part in authentic financial exchanges that reflect the kinds of payment systems they will encounter in stores, workplaces, and everyday life.
