We have had so much joy in utilizing the materials outside. Being outside gives us an opportunity to notice all the different colors and smells around us. We were so curious about what was happening and when the caterpillars would transition into a chrysalis and then to a butterfly. Students learned patience and gentleness as they observed the cycle of the butterflies. As soon as the live butterfly habitat, the Hungry Caterpillar sensory bin, tactile life cycle models, and the Hungry Caterpillar stuff animals props arrived, the lesson and science has transformed from abstract words on a page to living hands on experiences for the students. My students were able to see the magic of how a caterpillars life cycle changes right before their eyes. We were able to take learning from being on paper to seeing it in action hands on.
