Through stories, my students have learned to see the world beyond their own experiences while also finding reflections of themselves in characters and narratives that feel familiar and validating.\r\n\r\nFor many students, books have created a sense of belonging. When students see characters who share their culture, language, struggles, or dreams, they begin to understand that their own stories matter. This representation builds confidence and encourages students who may not initially see themselves as readers to take risks and engage more deeply in learning.\r\n\r\nBooks have also strengthened empathy within our classroom community. As students read about people facing challenges, making mistakes, or overcoming obstacles, they practice stepping into someone else's perspective. These discussions have led to more thoughtful conversations, stronger peer relationships, and a classroom culture where students listen more carefully to one another's ideas.\r\n\r\nAcademically, books have empowered students to think critically and ask meaningful questions. They learn to analyze characters' choices, connect themes to real-world issues, and defend their ideas using evidence. Reading has shifted many students from passive learners to active participants who are willing to debate, reflect, and challenge their own thinking.\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, books have become a source of comfort and motivation. Students often gravitate toward stories during moments when they need calm, inspiration, or escape. A book can give a reluctant reader confidence, help an anxious student feel understood, or inspire a young writer to try sharing their own voice.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most importantly, books have helped my sixth graders discover who they are becoming. At this age, students are navigating big emotions, growing independence, and questions about their place in the world. Through reading, they see that growth is messy, courage looks different for everyone, and change is possible.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, books are not just texts to analyze — they are tools for connection, growth, and transformation. They help my students build literacy skills, but more importantly, they help build compassionate, curious, and confident young people.","fullyFundedDate":1764724327676,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-library/9723322/","projectTitle":"Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Verderico","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9340754_orig.png?crop=1169,1170,x0,y475&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761059621871","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9340754"},{"teacherId":8468576,"projectId":9944526,"letterContent":"Thank you for your donation of printer paper to my classroom! We teach \"COVID kids.\" We've seen firsthand how engrossed they get with their chromebooks and how computer play has become normalized as a default in education nowadays. It was time to bring conscientiousness back into learning. \r\n\r\nWe believe that for most students, having to keep track of their papers and care for their things has been a positive development for their executing functioning. The students have returned to drafting their essays and narratives by hand, no longer waiting for autocorrect to spell out their thoughts for them, but being forced to sound words out as they write. With more paper comes more physical space to express themselves through writing. This year, we are working on students expanding their reasoning in their essays. Now that it has been a few months, I'm happy to share an update on how these materials are being used.\r\n\r\nTo start, our Calm Down Corner gets a lot of love. One of our school's focuses is on social-emotional learning, which requires that teachers explicitly teach and model coping strategies to deal with big emotions. Every classroom in our school is aligned on this by having a designated space to cool down during moments of frustration. Ours has posters on the walls (and even the pillows) with coping strategies, as well as a timer to help students manage their break appropriately. What you all contributed to this space was a cozy rug to define the area, as well as the noise-buffering headphones you see in the picture. You can see from the foot traffic and minor staining that this area is frequented in our classroom, but all the better! \r\n\r\nThe headphones are also a favorite for many students who have reached the point in their academic development at which they are able to recognize that the environment around them can be distracting and that they may benefit from some noise-cancelation.\r\n\r\nLastly, this small but mighty mobile whiteboard has been one of my personal favorite tools this year. I move it all around the room, depending on the focus of the lesson. I have used it to post images for a \"gallery walk\" when students traveled to different stations to learn about the participants of the French and Indian War. I have used it to model turning literary short answer questions into declarative statements so that students know how to respond to text-based questions. I've used it to post various sentence stater and vocabulary resources that can be moved around the room for students to access. During intervention, this whiteboard certainly gets use during phonics instruction and to model problem solving strategies for math word problems.\r\n\r\nThank you for allowing my classroom to be more than what it would have been as a government-funded space--one that gives us the essential tools to educate today's students and tomorrow's leaders.","fullyFundedDate":1755718046325,"projectUrl":"project/cozy-classroom/9428476/","projectTitle":"Cozy Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stanton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8468576_orig.jpg?crop=1013,1013,x0,y135&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1652317688600","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8468576"},{"teacherId":4634050,"projectId":9502555,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donations. It's been 3 months and the school year is well underway with routines established, our first ELA unit on narratives and the American Revolution wrapping up, and some new grammar being acquired.\r\n\r\nIn our intervention blocks where ESL students get explicit English instruction from me, we are utilizing the plastic folders to organize and keep track of grammar assignments and resources. To date, we have reviewed many grammatical concepts the students learned last year in 4th grade, including verb tenses, pronouns, and subject and predicate. We're now working on expanding their simple sentences into compound sentences with coordinating conjunctions, and these exercises are all stored in an organized fashion in their folders. \r\n\r\nRecently, students completed poster projects on the amendments included in the Bill of Rights, which were brought to life with the markers you sent us. Our classroom is covered in the chart paper you provided, prompting students to remember character traits we've discussed or helping us to keep track of ideas for the historical fiction stories we will write. Our windows are donned with the very conspicuous Astrobrights paper you provided us for students to remember how to spell some of their trickiest homophones.
