Kids get really excited about the graphic novel and ask me if we are reading \"New Kid\" today, as soon as they enter the library. \r\n\r\nAs our school is closing at the end of this year, the lessons of \"New Kid\" are deeply felt across our community. Now that it has been a few months, I'm happy to share an update on how these materials are being used.\r\n\r\nTo start, our Calm Down Corner gets a lot of love. One of our school's focuses is on social-emotional learning, which requires that teachers explicitly teach and model coping strategies to deal with big emotions. Every classroom in our school is aligned on this by having a designated space to cool down during moments of frustration. Ours has posters on the walls (and even the pillows) with coping strategies, as well as a timer to help students manage their break appropriately. What you all contributed to this space was a cozy rug to define the area, as well as the noise-buffering headphones you see in the picture. You can see from the foot traffic and minor staining that this area is frequented in our classroom, but all the better! \r\n\r\nThe headphones are also a favorite for many students who have reached the point in their academic development at which they are able to recognize that the environment around them can be distracting and that they may benefit from some noise-cancelation.\r\n\r\nLastly, this small but mighty mobile whiteboard has been one of my personal favorite tools this year. I move it all around the room, depending on the focus of the lesson. I have used it to post images for a \"gallery walk\" when students traveled to different stations to learn about the participants of the French and Indian War. I have used it to model turning literary short answer questions into declarative statements so that students know how to respond to text-based questions. I've used it to post various sentence stater and vocabulary resources that can be moved around the room for students to access. During intervention, this whiteboard certainly gets use during phonics instruction and to model problem solving strategies for math word problems.\r\n\r\nThank you for allowing my classroom to be more than what it would have been as a government-funded space--one that gives us the essential tools to educate today's students and tomorrow's leaders.","fullyFundedDate":1755718046325,"projectUrl":"project/cozy-classroom/9428476/","projectTitle":"Cozy Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stanton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8468576_orig.jpg?crop=1013,1013,x0,y135&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1652317688600","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8468576"},{"teacherId":4634050,"projectId":9502555,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donations. It's been 3 months and the school year is well underway with routines established, our first ELA unit on narratives and the American Revolution wrapping up, and some new grammar being acquired.\r\n\r\nIn our intervention blocks where ESL students get explicit English instruction from me, we are utilizing the plastic folders to organize and keep track of grammar assignments and resources. To date, we have reviewed many grammatical concepts the students learned last year in 4th grade, including verb tenses, pronouns, and subject and predicate. We're now working on expanding their simple sentences into compound sentences with coordinating conjunctions, and these exercises are all stored in an organized fashion in their folders. \r\n\r\nRecently, students completed poster projects on the amendments included in the Bill of Rights, which were brought to life with the markers you sent us. Our classroom is covered in the chart paper you provided, prompting students to remember character traits we've discussed or helping us to keep track of ideas for the historical fiction stories we will write. Our windows are donned with the very conspicuous Astrobrights paper you provided us for students to remember how to spell some of their trickiest homophones. When people donate essential items like tissues and printer paper, they are not just giving materials—they are directly supporting a learning environment where students feel cared for, prepared, and ready to succeed. I am deeply thankful for these donations because they impact the daily rhythm of my classroom in ways that many people may never see, but that my students and I feel every single day.\r\n\r\nTissues, for example, seem like a simple item, but in a room full of eleven- and twelve-year-olds, they are a necessity. Students come to school with runny noses from the cold weather, allergies in the spring, or the occasional tears that come from frustration, stress, or conflict. Having tissues on hand allows me to respond to these moments with compassion and without interruption. When we run out of tissues, students feel uncomfortable or embarrassed, and teaching time is lost as they leave the room to find alternatives. Donated tissues send a message to students: your comfort matters here. They help me maintain a warm, healthy, and respectful classroom environment where students can focus on learning rather than discomfort.\r\n\r\nPrinter paper is equally essential. In a classroom that thrives on creativity, collaboration, and structured literacy instruction, paper is the backbone of many activities. My students write narratives, answer text-based questions, complete graphic organizers, annotate mentor texts, draft essays, and publish their own stories. Printer paper allows me to provide accessible, differentiated materials tailored to my diverse learners—students in general education, English learners, and students receiving special education services. Without enough paper, I cannot print visuals, scaffolds, anchor charts, rubrics, or exemplars that support their learning. Every stack of donated paper becomes dozens of reading packets, small-group intervention materials, exit tickets, and writing drafts that help students grow as readers and writers.\r\n\r\nThese donations also lift a huge burden from teachers. Classroom budgets are limited, and many teachers end up purchasing basic supplies out of pocket. When people outside the classroom step in to help, it reminds me that I am not doing this work alone. Their generosity brings a sense of community and shared purpose. It reinforces the idea that education is a collective effort—that our students are supported not just by their teachers, but by caring adults who believe in them from afar.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these donations show students that people value their education. When they see new tissues, fresh stacks of paper, and printed materials ready for them each day, they understand that others are invested in their success. For many students, that sense of being supported can make a lasting difference in how they view school and themselves as learners.\r\n\r\nI am truly grateful for every person who donates these essential supplies. Their kindness directly strengthens my classroom, uplifts my students, and allows us to learn, write, read, and grow together with dignity and joy.","fullyFundedDate":1762266327460,"projectUrl":"project/paper-and-tissues/9850474/","projectTitle":"Paper and Tissues","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Verderico","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9340754_orig.png?crop=1169,1170,x0,y475&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761059621871","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9340754"},{"teacherId":3067855,"projectId":9477982,"letterContent":"Thank you to our generous donors for supplying our classroom with essential materials like paper towels, folders, Lysol wipes, markers, erasers, and dry erase boards. At this age, students are making one of the biggest transitions in their academic journey—moving from the structured, teacher-led environment of elementary school to the more independent, multi-class expectations of middle school. Having an agenda book gives them a concrete, daily system to manage that change, reinforcing habits that build both academic success and personal accountability.\r\n\r\nFirst and foremost, agenda books help students develop essential executive functioning skills. Many sixth graders are still learning how to plan ahead, manage time, and balance multiple assignments. Writing down homework, upcoming tests, and project deadlines allows them to visualize their week and prioritize their tasks. Students learn to break larger assignments into smaller steps, monitor due dates, and prepare materials in advance. This process supports their working memory and organization—skills that are critical not only for middle school but also for lifelong learning.\r\n\r\nIn addition, agenda books provide a consistent communication bridge between home and school. Parents can check their child's agenda to stay informed about homework, test dates, and classroom reminders. This transparency helps families reinforce study habits at home and reduces miscommunication. Teachers can also use the agendas to leave notes or reminders, which builds a partnership between educators and families in supporting each student's success. For students who struggle with remembering verbal directions or managing multiple responsibilities, this daily written record becomes an anchor for consistency and clarity.\r\n\r\nAgenda books also promote student ownership and accountability. When students record their assignments themselves—rather than relying on teachers to remind them—they take responsibility for their learning. Many students reported feeling proud when they could look back through their agendas and see all the work they had completed. This visible record of progress helps them feel capable and organized, increasing confidence in their ability to manage middle school expectations. Students begin to understand that responsibility is not something adults simply give them; it's something they practice and strengthen through daily habits.","fullyFundedDate":1755873913440,"projectUrl":"project/student-planners/9531610/","projectTitle":"Student Planners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Verderico","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9340754_orig.png?crop=1169,1170,x0,y475&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761059621871","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9340754"},{"teacherId":3177267,"projectId":9390679,"letterContent":"The donation of graphic novels has had a tremendous impact on my fourth-grade students. Many of my students come from low-income families and do not have access to books at home, so receiving new, high-interest titles in our classroom library made reading feel exciting and accessible. The colorful illustrations and engaging storylines immediately drew students in—many who once avoided reading began picking up books during independent reading time and even asked to borrow them to take home.\r\n\r\nAs a result of this donation, I have seen noticeable growth in both students' reading engagement and their confidence as readers. Graphic novels have helped struggling readers strengthen comprehension skills by providing visual context and breaking down complex text into manageable chunks. Students are now having meaningful conversations about characters, themes, and emotions, demonstrating deeper understanding and enthusiasm for reading. The books have become a shared experience in our classroom, sparking discussions and building a stronger reading community.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has fostered a genuine love of reading among my students. For many, these books represent more than just reading material—they are a source of comfort, joy, and belonging.
