The students, in my classroom, all receive services for emotional impairments and have been working to learn about emotions, how our emotions can cause different behaviors, coping skills and de-escalation strategies to use when they face negative emotions such as when they become frustrated or upset. My students have mastered discussing the strategies we have introduced this year, however, do not have a calm space,( or zen zone if you will), to calm their bodies and minds when they need a few minutes to recenter and return to learning. By adding a comfortable couch and some sensory tools to our Zen Zone we students will have a place to calm their minds and bodies in order to re-join our academic lessons! Students currently have a small carpet in our room to sit and reflect, however, they do not have a space apart from the rest of the class and our lesson to apply their de-escalation strategies and coping skills. They will be delighted to see a space that will help them use their skills and continue their learning days with less anxiety about where or how they will decompress and de-escalate when facing a difficult moment!
