Having an iPad stand to use as a document reader has been a wonderful addition to my classroom. Last year, our school was able to provide iPads for our math teachers, allowing us to instantly connect to our online curriculum. With the iPad, we can access lesson slides and project them onto the screen for students to follow along.\r\n\r\nNow, with the addition of the iPad stand, I can seamlessly transition between lesson slides and the camera view. This feature allows me to project student work for everyone to see, helping the class stay on track and making it easier for students to know what to write down.\r\n\r\nSince receiving the iPad stand about a month ago, I've been exploring different ways to incorporate it into my daily teaching routine. It's been exciting to experiment with new methods that make lessons more interactive and engaging for my students.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the calculators you helped fund have been an incredible resource. Students who don't have their own calculators can easily borrow one during class. These calculators are durable, lightweight, and solar-powered—perfect for everyday use.\r\n\r\nI'm truly grateful for generous supporters like you who continue to invest in our classrooms and community. They were assigned to make a photo card for one teacher at our school, using the photography design techniques they have learned this year. They also were supposed to get to know their assigned teacher so that they could take a photo which that teacher would love. \r\n All of that was mildly interesting for them, but once we actually began printing photos, they got really excited! I had no idea they would get that excited. It was like they had never seen their photos printed out before. Maybe they hadn't. Some knew what Pi day was, but most did not. I showed a Pi day video and demonstarted how to try and find the number pi.\r\nStudents roamed around looking for circles to measure circumference and diameter. I had one group measure at least 20 different circles. This activity sparked academic discourse about measuring, what pi is, and just doing math for fun. (Yes, I heard a 6th grader say that they liked doing math like this just for fun.)\r\nThe pi symbol tatoos were also a huge hit; every student in the school wanted a temporary math tatoo. They are thrilled to have a new set of calculators. As much as we tried to take care of them, our previous calculators were quite beat up with regular wear and tear. These new ones are beautiful and work great!\r\n In 6th grade, for seven of the nine units of math curriculum, students are allowed to use calculators. This is because the mathematics has moved beyond the art of calculation. They are supposed to have learned adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing already. And if they haven't by now, we want them to move on and succeed in the 6th grade math standards.\r\n I could go on and on why calculators in 6th grade math are such excellent tools. Students also feel older and it helps them transition to middle school. They can focus on the new math concepts and not get bogged down by long division.
