I requested 3 laptops and a mobile whiteboard to promote engagement in math. With the laptops, students can play online math games, or get some practice on Khan Academy, or do an interactive lesson on Desmos.com. The mobile whiteboard allows for student presentations, and more interactive group projects. Students love the extra interactivity that you can't get with just a pencil and paper, and they learn just how useful technology can be. Many of my students do not have computer access at home, and only some have a smartphone. The laptops will give them much needed experience using this kind of technology! Doing work on a computer often gives students immediate feedback on their progress, so they do not have to wait for me, which increases their self reliance and boosts confidence. It is also a huge help to give students more visuals in mathematics, especially English language learners. I just wish I could have a class set!
