The headphones were beneficial to all of my students, but they especially helped my multilingual students and my students with special needs. Many of my students learn best through repetition, movement, and play-based instruction, and these resources will help increase participation, confidence, and overall academic growth. Classroom supplies will also ensure students have access to the everyday materials they need to learn successfully and stay organized throughout the school day.\r\nIn addition to supporting academics, this project will help create a calm, supportive environment that promotes social-emotional growth and self-regulation. Noise-cancelling headphones will provide students with sensory sensitivities a quiet space to focus, reduce overstimulation, and feel more comfortable during learning activities. Social-emotional books will help students build important life skills such as recognizing emotions, problem-solving, friendship, and coping strategies. As a teacher, I spend lots of time determining books at kids can look at read, research, generate interest, and fall in love with. Part of the success for this is organizing a library to where kids have easy access and are also stimulated visually to make choices based on what they see, and not necessarily what their friends are reading. Being able to update the library baskets has been huge because it allows me to color coordinate by genre, fiction versus non-fiction, and then because social studies is such a huge part of 5th Grade.
