As a teacher, I spend lots of time determining books at kids can look at read, research, generate interest, and fall in love with. Part of the success for this is organizing a library to where kids have easy access and are also stimulated visually to make choices based on what they see, and not necessarily what their friends are reading. Being able to update the library baskets has been huge because it allows me to color coordinate by genre, fiction versus non-fiction, and then because social studies is such a huge part of 5th Grade. It also allows me to showcase books on history. Kids painted, played games and made crafts. Some did tattoos and others made necklaces with glow in the dark beads. Our entire school was able to participate in this celebration. It was such a fun and unexpected way to celebrate students for simply showing up and doing their best. We already have students asking when the Bubble Surprise Attendance Day will happen again! I especially loved that it was a non-food reward that still brought so much excitement and joy to their day.\r\n\r\nThe prizes for our treasure box have also been incredibly motivating. As a reading interventionist, I work closely with struggling readers, and having engaging incentives makes such a difference. The little squishies and stuffed animal key chains were especially popular—students left our sessions smiling from ear to ear.
