Their enthusiasm was contagious, and it was clear that they felt valued knowing that people outside of our school cared enough to invest in their education.\r\n\r\nWe have been using these resources to support collaborative learning, creative projects, and daily classroom activities. One memorable moment occurred when students used the materials during a group project that required them to research, organize information, and present their findings to their classmates. The new resources helped students stay engaged and gave them the tools they needed to produce higher-quality work. Students who are often hesitant to participate became more involved because they felt better prepared and more confident.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, my students will continue using these resources throughout the school year as they work on writing assignments, collaborative projects, presentations, and activities that strengthen critical thinking and communication skills. One memorable moment was watching groups compare their control pancakes to their substitute versions and then immediately begin debating why one browned faster or rose differently. Students became deeply engaged because the chemistry was visible, edible, and connected to something familiar.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were genuinely excited that our classroom was turning into a hybrid chemistry lab and test kitchen. Many students who are usually hesitant in science class became more willing to participate because the project felt approachable and relevant.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for students involve continuing their investigation through chemical reactions, quantitative reasoning, and final brochure presentations where they explain the chemistry behind their results. When my students first saw the wobble stools and jigsaw puzzles, their faces lit up with curiosity. One student, who often finds it difficult to stay seated during long reading blocks, immediately gravitated toward a stool. Their reaction was priceless—a mix of surprise and relief as they realized they could finally channel their natural energy without being \"disruptive.\" It has been a game-changer to see students who once struggled with focus now sitting tall, subtly moving, and staying deeply immersed in their work.\r\n\r\nWe are currently putting these tools to work during our daily \"Collaboration Stations.\" In one recent project, a group of students gathered around a 500-piece puzzle to practice spatial reasoning and teamwork. I watched as they navigated the frustration of missing pieces and celebrated the \"click\" of a perfect fit. This hands-on problem-solving is exactly what they needed; it transforms abstract concepts like perseverance into a tangible, shared experience. The wobble stools have also become the most sought-after seats in our \"Writer's Workshop,\" allowing students to find their physical rhythm while they find their creative voice.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next steps involve integrating these puzzles into our upcoming Geometry and Logic unit. Students will be tasked with timing their progress and analyzing the patterns they find, using the puzzles as a bridge to understanding complex shapes. Meanwhile, the flexible seating has already begun to shift our classroom culture toward one of self-regulation. Students are learning to identify when they need to \"wobble\" to stay on task, a skill that will serve them long after they leave my classroom. Your generosity gave us something that was both fun and meaningful, and it has already made a real difference in our classroom.\r\n\r\nMy students used the new resources as part of a Homebase community-building activity. Together, they built the flowers and then helped decorate our classroom with them. It was more than just a building project. Students worked together, talked, problem-solved, and created something beautiful that they now get to see every day. My classroom was pretty drab before, and it has quickly become a space my Homebase students are happy to call theirs.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were genuinely excited. Many of them were surprised that they would get to use LEGO sets in school, especially for something that would stay in the classroom and brighten it up. There was immediate energy in the room, and students were eager to start building. It was one of those moments that brought joy right away.\r\n\r\nOne of the best parts is that this project has already sparked even more creativity. Students have already begun coming up with other ideas to make the classroom \"theirs\" and to leave their mark on the space in positive ways. The next steps for us are to keep building that sense of ownership and community in Homebase. We focus a lot on relationships, teamwork, and belonging, and these flowers have helped launch that in a very real way.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your kindness and support. We received all the supplies and they're ready to go. The project launches in May after AP exams, when students from my AP Psychology, AP Physics, and AP Computer Science classes will work together to build interactive games.\r\n\r\nThe micro:bits are essentially small programmable computers that respond to motion, touch, and other inputs. Students will code them to create physical games instead of just writing programs on a screen. This matters because right now, my students are learning their subjects in isolation—Physics students study motion, CSP students write code, Psychology students learn about human behavior—but they rarely see how these connect. The micro:bits force them to integrate what they know: they'll need physics to make motion controls work, coding to program the device, and psychology to design games people actually want to play. It's hands-on work that shows them how their separate classes apply to building real things.\r\n\r\nWe haven't started using the materials yet, but we're excited to put them to work when the time is right in May. The materials provided have already made such a meaningful difference in our students' learning and engagement every single day. Each item has brought new opportunities for hands-on practice, skill development, and confidence building—things that are truly invaluable for our students.\r\n\r\nThe phonics readers have quickly become one of our favorite classroom tools. These books allow our students to work on reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary in ways that feel accessible and encouraging. Many of our students are developing foundational literacy skills, and being able to use these phonics readers gives them the chance to practice decoding sounds, identifying sight words, and reading sentences with growing independence. It's been amazing to see the pride in their faces when they finish a story on their own or read aloud to a friend. The readers also help us differentiate instruction for a variety of levels, allowing each student to progress at their own pace while still feeling successful.\r\n\r\nBeyond literacy, our class has been using the coffee and beverage cart materials to strengthen life skills that are essential for independence. Students are learning to follow multi-step directions, measure ingredients, organize materials, and communicate with customers and peers. These experiences help them apply academic concepts—such as counting money, reading instructions, and writing orders—in real-world contexts that are both meaningful and fun. Watching them prepare a cup of coffee, take an order, and smile proudly as they serve a teacher or staff member is a daily reminder of how powerful hands-on learning can be.\r\n\r\nThe coffee project has also become a wonderful opportunity to build social and vocational skills. Students work together to prepare drinks, greet customers, and take turns with specific responsibilities. They practice using polite greetings, maintaining eye contact, and speaking clearly—skills that are essential for workplace readiness and community inclusion. For many of our students, this has been the first time they've had a structured opportunity to serve others, and they take tremendous pride in doing it well.","fullyFundedDate":1752601029766,"projectUrl":"project/the-bare-necessities/9454826/","projectTitle":"The Bare Necessities","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nguyen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3557713_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1485150324084","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3557713"},{"teacherId":4058633,"projectId":9381872,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom! Students crowded around as we unpacked the magnetism kits, the evolution of whales model, and even the string lights that now make our science lab feel fun and inviting.
