This year I have been given the opportunity to teach at new school for our district that serves Title I students at an alternative education junior high. The students in our classes come for various reasons and with various reasons for needing an alternative format to be successful in a 9th grade program. At our new school, I teach English Language Arts and American Civil War. For this DonorsChoose project, I asked for the supplies needed to run a successful writers workshop class.\r\nMy students arrived day one, ready to rebel against any authority and structure that we tried to install. Instead of finding rigidity and punishment, the students were met with flexibility and understanding. The one thing that I did make mandatory was, and still is, a daily journal write and share out. We began with the journal prompt, \"What brought each of us to this campus?\" I wanted each of them to acknowledge and understand that we each arrived here to do a set of circumstances that we may see some similarities in and we could better support each other if we understood the past experiences that each of us had experiences in a regular classroom. \r\nMy students have utilized their journals and supplies every single day that we have been on campus. They share their creativity and their thoughts and feelings and I am so proud of how much growth and progress I have seen in each of them as we moved through the first few very rough weeks of the new school year and into what has become a solid writing program. \r\nThank you again for your donations and support!","fullyFundedDate":1746656656440,"projectUrl":"project/lets-get-creative-with-writers-workshop/9280755/","projectTitle":"Let’s Get Creative with Writers Workshop!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Miske","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10005620_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1784851322419","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10005620"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_87873","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":710,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":69,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":70,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":9,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":87873,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about North Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"North Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/grants-pass-school-district-7/north-middle-school/87873"}
