Because of your generosity, my students have transitioned from just reading about molecular structures to actually seeing them in action. With the Copper (II) Sulfate, Ethanol, and Paraffin Wax you provided, my classroom has transformed into a high-stakes testing ground. There is nothing quite like the collective \"whoa\" in the room when a solution of Copper (II) Sulfate successfully completes a circuit and lights up a bulb, while the Ethanol stays dark. These hands-on moments are where the abstract concepts of ionic and covalent bonding finally click for them.\r\n\r\nYour contribution provided more than just chemicals; it provided the essential tools that make a lab run smoothly. The Frey Scientific glass stirring rods and burner lighters have allowed my students to work like true professionals, carefully observing why Paraffin Wax stubbornly resists dissolving in water while Sucrose and Calcium Chloride disappear instantly. By testing these diverse materials, my students aren't just memorizing facts—they are investigating the fundamental rules of the universe. This text, Parable of the Sower, has been a perfect extension and expansion for students who already learned about the interconnectedness of destabilization, displacement, and adaptive resilience of characters in our whole-class text from the prior semester. Shifting from realistic historical fiction to speculative fiction, we are now the pilots of an experience where we ask not what is already but what could be. This is a profound means to look at our existing and evolving world with new eyes, and to critically interrogate the relationship between the decisions that have already been made and the question of what we can do to sustain the productive and nourishing ones while confronting and reversing their more damaging corollaries. Such work is aptly-aimed for seniors who are preparing themselves to take the next great leap into the world when they graduate. Comfort, familiarity, and competence take a back seat to a more rigorous spirit of inquiry, dismantling, and creative means of reparation.\r\n\r\nAccordingly, we have stepped up our means of discourse with structured 'shark tank' discussions centered not on identifying accurate existing answers but exploring ambiguous possibilities with an emphasis on interpretation and counterargument. We are testing what we've learned about sustainability by introducing practices of subsistence. We are furthermore unsettling and challenging the pros and cons of independence versus interdependence, and in so doing, posing meaningful questions around relational risk-taking and trust. Parable of the Sower, the text you've generously helped us to manifest as our centerpiece, is proving a perfect vessel for this emphasis an adaptive critical thinking.","fullyFundedDate":1758810358691,"projectUrl":"project/investigating-sustainability-through-spe/9756071/","projectTitle":"Investigating Sustainability Through Speculative Fiction","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. McNamara","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2992370_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1526477944433","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2992370"},{"teacherId":9997077,"projectId":9820262,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible generosity in funding a new printer and laminator for our chemistry and physics classroom! It's hard to overstate how much of a \"glow-up\" my teaching materials have received thanks to your support. Instead of handing out grainy, black-and-white worksheets that inevitably end up in the recycling bin by Friday, I've been able to produce high-quality, color-coded infographics that truly help my students visualize complex concepts. Seeing the periodic table in all its chromatic glory helps them identify trends and groups much faster, and the durability of the lamination means these resources can survive the chaotic energy of a high school lab.\r\n\r\nBeyond the visual appeal, this project has significantly shifted how our classroom impacts the environment. By creating permanent, laminated resources like station signs and reference sheets, I've been able to drastically reduce our daily paper waste. It has simplified my prep work immensely; instead of standing at the communal school copier every morning, I can now pull out my \"evergreen\" materials and get straight to teaching. My teenage students appreciate having daily access to pimple patches, bandaids, Tic Tacs, deodorant, Chapstick, pads, and snacks. They also make use of stress balls and grip strengtheners to relieve tension and channel their physical energy. Students spend the entire school day indoors and sitting for 95% of the time, so the ability to exert some energy while learning is extremely helpful. \r\n\r\nLikewise students love the phone charging stations. Students (understandably) chafe at having to surrender their phones when they enter class (school policy). Being able to charge their phones while they are inaccessible to them is a small but meaningful gesture that numbs the sting of turning in their property. \r\n\r\nLastly, the flags I have hanging in my room communicate that everyone is welcome, seen, and respected. It is a powerful counter to the messages of exclusion that they experience all too often out of school. On the first day of school this year, two students were taking proud pictures of each other standing before the Haitian flag in my room. Days later, a student I don't teach walked into my room between classes because he couldn't believe there was a Vietnamese flag hanging in his school. He has been in the U.S. for five years, and this is the first time he's seen one in school. Tri and I now have a relationship by virtue of this flag. \r\n\r\nI can't overstate how much it means to me to be able to offer these touches of humanity to my students, who are the most amazing people.
