Many of them commented on how impactful it felt to put the bags together knowing they would directly help classmates and families who might need extra support. One especially meaningful moment was watching students thoughtfully discuss what they would want included if they were receiving a bag, showing empathy, maturity, and genuine care for others.\r\n\r\nThis project has opened the door for continued conversations about wellness, community needs, and service learning. These new texts have allowed us to build critical literacy skills such as close reading, analyzing theme and author's purpose, making text-to-self and text-to-world connections, and engaging in thoughtful discussion around perspective and representation. Students are learning not only how to read more deeply, but how to think critically about whose stories are told and why those stories matter.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is now more active and engaging. Students choose books that speak to their interests and identities, participate in small-group discussions, annotate texts, and write reflective responses that connect literature to their own lives and current social issues. The availability of diverse, high-interest texts has increased independent reading time, improved reading stamina, and encouraged more students to participate in class conversations who were previously hesitant to do so.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who once struggled to find books they connected with are now some of our most enthusiastic readers. I have seen students recommend books to one another, ask for time to continue reading, and proudly share passages that resonated with them.
