My students struggle to read, analyze, and think critically. They struggle with writing and they all too easily get lost in complex texts. In the 11th grade, students need to learn to navigate text if they are to be successful on their state exams. These tools (highlighters) are such a simple addition to my classroom and will be used every single day to teach my students how to sort through complex texts. There is no budget for classroom supplies at my school, and teachers are expected to fund whatever they want from their own paychecks. My students deserve simple classroom tools like this so we can really get to work on developing their metacognitive strategies in class. With these highlighters and strategies, when they get to the test at the end of the year, they're sufficient and confident enough to do it on their own.
