Students are practicing comprehension skills such as making predictions, identifying themes, summarizing, and making connections between texts and their own lives. Many of the books also help strengthen vocabulary development, fluency, and critical thinking skills. Because we work with students at different reading levels, having a variety of engaging texts allows us to match students with books that are both accessible and motivating. The excitement around these books has encouraged students to spend more time reading independently and discussing books with their peers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, collaborative, and student-centered. Students participate in small group instruction, partner reading, read-alouds, and independent reading time throughout the day. We focus not only on helping students become stronger readers, but also on helping them see themselves as readers who can enjoy and connect with books. One of the most rewarding parts of our classroom is hearing students eagerly recommend books to one another or seeing them proudly carry around a new book they earned from the vending machine. The books have helped create a positive reading culture where students are excited to read and celebrate one another's growth.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially connected with the new books in meaningful ways. Some of our more reluctant readers have become motivated to work toward earning a book token because they are excited by the chance to choose a book of their own. Other students light up when they find books connected to their interests, favorite characters, sports, animals, or graphic novels. One of the most special moments has been seeing students who previously struggled with confidence proudly share that they finished a book independently for the first time. The birthday books have also meant so much to students, many of whom are thrilled to receive a brand-new book they can keep forever.
