Having a new carpet in our library area made it an inviting and comfortable place for our students to pull up a chair and engage in literacy activities with their classmates and friends. It was an absolute joy to see students show a love for reading by \"reading\" to themselves and others. They often choose books that we've read in class, retelling familiar stories such as The Three Bears, The Napping House, and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.\r\n\r\nThey also used this area to listen to stories in the listening station and practice their 3-point grip through drawing and coloring. In addition, they developed persistence and the ability to focus on a task while completing puzzles. But most of all, they built relations with one another while learning. For many of our families, access to consistent laundry facilities is not guaranteed. Before this resource was available, our students often came to school wearing clothing that was not clean—not out of neglect, but out of circumstance. This affected their confidence, participation, and, in some cases, attendance.\r\n\r\nNow, with the washer and dryer on-site, we are able to meet a very real and human need with compassion and immediacy. Our teachers and support staff can discreetly assist families in ensuring that students have clean uniforms, coats, and other essentials, removing a barrier that once weighed heavily on both children and parents.\r\n\r\nThe impact extends beyond hygiene—it's about dignity, belonging, and equity. When a child feels clean and confident, they walk taller, smile more, and engage more fully in their learning. When families know the school is a place that cares for their whole well-being, trust deepens and connection strengthens.\r\n\r\nThis simple appliance has become a lifeline for many—a quiet, powerful reminder that in our school community, every need matters. The washer and dryer are not just machines; they are symbols of care, empathy, and opportunity—ensuring that no child's learning or self-worth is limited by circumstances beyond their control.","fullyFundedDate":1761930879750,"projectUrl":"project/addressing-basic-needs-to-foster-equity/9678015/","projectTitle":"Addressing Basic Needs to Foster Equity, Dignity, and Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hong","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8261204_orig.jpg?crop=271,271,x133,y42&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1670813354549","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/libraryofhongress"},{"teacherId":4834859,"projectId":9276634,"letterContent":"The new printer and ink have made a meaningful impact on our classroom by helping students learn through clear, hands-on visuals. Printed alphabet mats, sorting cards, counting activities, and classroom displays make learning concrete and accessible for all students.\r\n\r\nWhat excites the children most is seeing materials made just for them. They love recognizing their names, photos, and classroom experiences on the displays and activities. This sense of ownership has increased their participation and enthusiasm during small groups and centers.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially benefited from this resource.
