My students come to school every day facing more challenges than most adults ever have to think about. They worry about where their next meal will come from. Will anyone pick them up from school? Is that police siren going to their house? Did those gunshots hit anyone they love? They attend a public school in the inner city of Washington DC. They are full of energy, are eager to learn, and are yearning for someone to believe in them. My students live in a city with so many educational opportunities, yet most families can't afford the transportation to cross the bridge to take advantage of them.
