My students used these items in hands-on labs of the the waves and energy units. In the energy unit, the students designed and built cardstock rollercoasters. They used the photogate to measure the speed of a marble as it exited the rollercoaster at the bottom. With a measured value for the marble's final speed, students calculated the marble's final translational kinetic energy and compared it to the initial potential energy. Students discovered that the energy difference between these two energies was due to rotational kinetic energy and friction. This was a wonderful engineering experience that the students enjoyed!\r\n\r\nThe students also enjoyed using the jumbo spring to model wave generation with different frequencies. This introductory hands-on experience was followed up with a music lab in which students calculated the lengths of rubber band needed to make notes of different pitch, and then they played Mary Had A Little Lamb using a guitar fret system designed around their calculations. Finally, the gyroscope was a wonderful demonstration tool that enthralled the class. My students used these photogates for the first time today and they took to them immediately! They are easy to set up and easy to use. The class was unanimous that using these photogates was much easier than the previous method of determining velocity, which involved cell phone video recording the motion of an object with a meter stick in the background and a second timer running in the background. That is a lot of work!\r\n\r\nWe have just started the energy unit and the students used these sensors to measure the speed of a marble after rolling down a ramp. They then compared the potential energy of the marble at the top of the ramp to the kinetic energy of the marble at the bottom. The ease of sensor use facilitated multiple investigations at different heights and allowed students more time to work through the calculations to realize that some energy was being lost to rotation and friction.
