Your contribution toward our first novel of the year, Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley has been a literary adventure for eighty-six high school juniors (and this number will more than double over the next year). Students researched and presented period-specific scientific and cultural information. Individual students annotated extracts from the text and presented their observations on the projector camera, so all students could learn to unravel the layers of Shelly's nuanced work. We have explored literary techniques that help us discover global issues (themes) and have authored analytical essays. The culminating highlight of our Frankenstein study was our walking field trip to a local theater for a private viewing of Guillermo del Toro's newly released film, which added depth to students' experiences, illuminated even more global issues than Shelley's original text, and added enrichment for students of all skill levels. Students can now keep their devices powered throughout the day, allowing them to engage fully in digital lessons, research, and interactive learning without interruptions.
