The desks in my classroom are horrible. They are the kind with the chair welded to the desk by a large metal bar. Students refer to them as "prison chairs." The desks offer no room for individual student movement, and they really inhibit creating collaborative spaces in the classroom. Interaction and communication are critical in my classroom. Students spend their time grappling with global issues, the meaning of language, and the impact of intercultural exchange; not being able to push their desks together and get head to head with their group-mates really makes it hard to fully connect with each other ideas and thoughts.
This project will make my classroom physically resemble what students do intellectually: work together and share.
These four tables and eight chairs will allow 8 of my 30+ students (per class period) to sit with a partner table that can be pushed together with another to make a group table. Slowly but surely, we hope to replace all of the individual prison chairs and have a room filled with collaborative seating. Your support of this project will help us head in the right direction
