I grew up playing with these same toys as a child. It gives me great pleasure to see my students using their imagination and creativity as they create cars, boats, planes, and houses with the Bristle Blocks. Watching my students read the instructions on how to build structures with the Lincoln Logs shows they understand that print has meaning and how to use it to help them with building.\r\n\r\nThe cash register is a perfect addition to our Dramatic Play center. The students often dress up, make a car with the chairs so they can drive to the store. Now, they have money and a cash register to use for the store. Currently we have an Ice Cream Shop in Dramatic Play. The students are able to use the money and cash register to buy ice cream.\r\n\r\nPlay is definitely the work of a child. My students were absolutely thrilled to see such a fun, hands-on resource added to our learning environment, and they couldn't wait to dive in\r\n\r\nWe have used the water table for many different activities. The students were able to retell the story of The Gingerbread Man by using props to build a raft for the Gingerbread Man so he could cross the river without being eaten by the fox. I also added foam blocks designed for water play during our Buildings Study. Currently, we have Sink and Float Alphabet, Number, and Shape balls to help students learn new vocabulary. \r\n\r\nBecause of your kindness, my students now have a dedicated space to explore, discover, and learn through play. We have read both of the books. With these materials, the students have been able to retell the stories. Being able to do this has help improve thier reading comprehension skills. \r\n\r\nThe story telling puppets have also been popular with my students. They are able to physically manipulate the character puppets while retelling the stories. I have also noticed the students using the characters to make up a different version of the story. \r\n\r\nThese materials have improved vocabulary, speaking, and comprehension skills. It gives the library center a well-defined space and adds a cozy feeling. The students like to sit on the rug to read books or play literacy games. They also talk about the designs on the rug which helps build their vocabulary and conversational skills. \r\n\r\nI put the pencil grips on the pencils and colored pencils in my writing center. After showing the students how to place their fingers in the grip, they are able to do it independently. Several of the students have improved their writing skills by using a pencil grip. Not only do they get to build, but they learn shapes, colors, and problem solving skills. I have also seen quite a bit of negotiation and compromise as a student always seems to want pieces another student is using. They wanted to know his name and if he was real. I explained that if they were sad or needed someone to talk to, they could talk to Theo. We added Theo to our Cozy Corner/ Safe Place in the classroom. I see students over in the Cozy Center holding Theo and talking to him about their feelings. \r\n\r\nThe Light Table Pegs were also a big hit. The students were able to sort the pegs by color.
