My students were so excited to get the supplies to create a care closet in the Junior High and High School at our school because they know how much they use the one in my classroom. We got to read the books and learned that chronic hunger is an issue. We read about the civil rights leaders who did small things with huge impacts. After reading about MLK, we joined Yoland King's 100 million Acts of Service initiative. Students built the shelves and organized the donated supplies from the project. Students have even donated some extras supplies on their own. We did a lesson on advertising. Then they researched a name for the closet and they decided to call it the Helping Hand Care Closet. Students created a logo and made posters to advertise it in the junior high and high school. They also added a slogan for the closet \"Be the Change\". We set it up in the junior high and high school building at the beginning of March. We have checked it after a week and know that it is being used by so many. \r\nOur plan going forward is to restock it once a week. If things continue to go well we can expand our offerings to include other items and possibly clothes. \r\n\r\nThe impact this project has and will have is going to be big for our school. My students have learned compassion, empathy and how a small group of kids can make a change. The Helping Hand Care Closet will hopefully teach others that it's okay to need help and there is no shame in asking for it. It will hopefully instill in students that caring for your neighbor is important in our community. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity, impacting my students and our school. When they get done with work early they are constantly going on their computers to the online component of Storyworks and exploring. We had great debates over this topic and the Storyworks layout made it easy for students of all levels to write this paper.
