The small couches, table, and plants have created a calm environment where students can work together, reflect, and reset when needed. During our literacy block, students often choose the Zen Zone for partner reading and small group discussions. Recently, while working on a reading response activity, a group of students gathered at the table to collaboratively discuss character traits from our story. The comfortable seating helped them stay engaged and focused as they shared ideas and supported each other's thinking. The space is also important for social-emotional support. When students feel overwhelmed or need a moment to breathe, they can spend a few minutes in the Zen Zone to calm down and refocus before returning to learning. It has helped promote self-regulation and positive classroom community.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the Zen Zone set up (coming back to school from Christmas Break), their excitement was immediate. They were amazed that our classroom now had a cozy space just for them. Many students commented on how comfortable the couches were and how the plants made the space feel peaceful. Several students said it felt like a \"real lounge\" or \"a place to relax and think.\" Most importantly, they understood that the space was created for them—to support their learning, collaboration, and well-being. They felt proud knowing that people they had never met cared enough to help improve their classroom.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, students will keep using the Zen Zone to support both academic learning and collaboration. In our upcoming literacy and writing projects, students will use the space for peer discussions, brainstorming ideas, and revising their work together. We are also preparing for upcoming classroom presentations and collaborative projects where students will practice explaining their thinking and giving feedback to one another. The Zen Zone will serve as a small-group meeting area where students can plan, rehearse, and reflect on their work.\r\n\r\nThis space has already helped create a more balanced classroom environment where students can think clearly, support each other, and grow both academically and emotionally. We are incredibly grateful to our donors for helping make this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1765589653370,"projectUrl":"project/the-zen-zone/9590765/","projectTitle":"The Zen Zone","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Erwin Woodard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6060397_orig.jpg?crop=378,378,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1628747797095","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6060397"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_107034","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":566,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":94,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":29,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":65,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.8,"schoolId":107034,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about KIPP Vida Preparatory Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"KIPP Vida Preparatory Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/kipp-vida-preparatory-academy/107034"}
