Each book and series progresses in difficulty by addressing more complex letter groups. Some students needed to start with the basic sounds of the single letters of the alphabet (e.g., short vowels in had, run, sit). As students have progressed in their learning, they have been able to tackle longer words containing the basic sounds (e.g., ramp, pants, twist). As they demonstrate familiarity with sounding out the basic code, they are able to handle additional sounds and spellings (e.g., sh, th, tch, ck, ch in such words as ship, then, switch, stack, hunch) and later multiple syllables (e.g. lifted, jacket. signal).
