The galaxy lights and cloud light covers have also made a big difference in the feel of our room. The kids love coming in and seeing the lights on, and it gives our classroom a much calmer feeling during the day.\r\n\r\nWe have also started making our own \"motivation jars.\" The students helped mix the glitter and choose names like Spare Courage, Extra Focus, Math Magic, and Quiet Bravery. They think the names are hilarious, but they also really like having something they can look at when they are frustrated with a hard problem or need a little encouragement. Our little desk animals have become learning buddies, too. Students read to them, explain their math thinking to them, and sometimes just keep them nearby while they work. I love seeing students who might be hesitant to answer in front of the class confidently explain something to their little animal first.\r\n\r\nWe are still finding new ways to use the materials as we move through the year. The bugs and fossils will be especially useful during our science lessons, and the small animals will continue to be part of our everyday classroom routines.
