Right after I received last year's generous donation of books for my students, there was a disruption in my access to my classroom. Thankfully, all has been resolved and I was able to present my students with the books they received one month into this school year.\r\nWhat followed surprised and delighted me- my kids came in every class period and picked a book to read. They took turns reading out loud to each other the books I was able to find that were written in Chuukese and Marshallese- the native language of a considerable number of my students. I got to witness some of my kids enjoying the very same books I read when I was their age, along with current books that resonated with them.\r\nReading physical books has quickly become a habit for some of my kids- more than a few have asked to take home a book to read and return when they are finished.\r\nNone of this would have happened without you. A group of our students took ownership of a value-added agriculture project from start to finish. They researched local ingredients, developed and tested a delicious boba drink featuring local honey and māmaki tea grown on our campus, created a brand and marketing plan, and sold the product to our school community. They were incredibly successful, selling their entire quota!\r\n\r\nThis project gave students authentic experience in recipe development, pricing, marketing, customer service, budgeting, and entrepreneurship. It also connected sustainability to business: our māmaki is grown using compost made from cafeteria food waste, allowing students to experience the process from food scraps to compost, crops, and finally a marketable product.\r\n\r\nWe have now ordered reusable BPA-free cups so students can continue developing and selling their drinks while reducing single-use plastic waste.
