When students see characters who look like them, come from backgrounds similar to theirs, or experience things they recognize from their own lives, their excitement about reading grows. They are eager to share connections, talk about the characters, and participate in meaningful classroom discussions.\r\n\r\nI have watched students who might normally be hesitant to speak up become animated when they recognize themselves in a story. They begin asking questions, sharing their own experiences, and listening to the perspectives of their classmates. The books have shown them that people of color can be the heroes, the scientists, the leaders, the friends, the dreamers, and simply everyday people living meaningful lives.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books have helped my students understand that their stories matter. They deserve to see themselves represented in the books they read, while also learning about people and experiences different from their own. On the first day, many students stopped to glance at the map on their way to their seats.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular was fascinated by the map. At every opportunity, he was up looking at it. \"Where's Spain?\" \"What about Portugal?\" \"Can I go find Morocco?\" \"Can you show me where Belgium is?\"\r\n\r\nThat last question really surprised me. \"How did you hear about Belgium?\" I asked inquisitively. It turns out he wanted to find the countries of the World Cup soccer stars.\r\n\r\nEvery morning, we look at a \"Photo of the Day,\" an intriguing photograph taken somewhere in the world. We discuss the photo, look at a small map highlighting its location, and then mark it on our world map.\r\n\r\nMy students' experiences are somewhat limited, and their knowledge of where they are in relation to the rest of the world is very limited as well. Your generosity has given my students the opportunity to experience a wonderful piece of literature together, and I am truly grateful.\r\n\r\nHaving a book for every student makes such a difference in our classroom. Instead of sharing copies or relying on a few classroom books, each student now has their own copy to read, annotate, discuss, and refer back to as we explore the story. \r\n\r\nIn our room, there is a wall prominently displaying \"Thinking Tools\", which include Thinking Maps, Depth and Complexity, Content Imperatives, Universal Themes, and Notice and Note. These Thinking Tools allow for deep discussion and higher level thinking. Seedfolks is a book in which we can apply all the Thinking Tools. \r\n\r\nEach of the 13 chapters is told from the perspective of a different immigrant character. One by one, they come together to create a community garden in a dilapidated vacant lot in a poor neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. Through the shared work of gardening, isolated strangers become friends, overcome language and racial barriers, and creatively solve challenges that arise. \r\n\r\nThe book provides opportunities to explore themes of community, diversity, perspective, and the ways individuals can make a difference. As we read, students annotate the Thinking Took directly in their books and then use that information to create one page summaries of each character. The kids are having lots of \"ah ha\" moments as they make connections between characters. Additionally, their interest in geography is expanding as we take a deeper dive into the country of origin of each character. \r\n\r\nA shared class novel gives students a common experience that we can build upon through writing, discussion, and activities.
