The beautiful, intelligent students I teach need to see themselves in the texts I read to them and the texts they find in our classroom library. Although I have been fortunate to build a substantial classroom library over the years, many of the books are outdated, in various stages of wear and tear, and, most significantly, do not reflect the students in my classroom. I teach, almost exclusively, students of color, specifically Black and Latinx students. As a White teacher, it is my responsibility to make sure that my students see characters, persons of history, and everyday people who look like them and have similar life experiences. All of my students, but particularly those of color, deserve to see, know, and believe, that literature is for them, too.
