Your generosity has made a meaningful difference in our library and during Nevada Reading Week. The new books have provided students with engaging texts that reflect a variety of interests, cultures, and reading levels. As students explore these books, they are practicing important literacy skills such as comprehension, vocabulary development, making connections, asking questions, and identifying key details. These skills help students become stronger, more confident readers both in and out of the classroom.\r\n\r\nReading in our school is more than simply turning pages. Students visit the library each week to discover new books, explore topics that interest them, and develop a love of reading. Since receiving these materials, students have been excited to browse the new titles and eagerly share their discoveries with classmates and teachers. Several reluctant readers who typically struggle to find books that interest them have shown increased enthusiasm and are checking out books more frequently. Seeing students become excited about reading and proudly recommend books to their friends has been one of the most rewarding outcomes of this project.\r\n\r\nThe incentives have also helped make Nevada Reading Week a memorable celebration of literacy. Students were motivated to participate in reading activities, complete challenges, and celebrate their accomplishments. Moving forward, students will continue using these new books to build reading stamina, explore new interests, and strengthen critical literacy skills. Thanks to your support, our students have access to resources that encourage curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of reading. The colorful materials have also helped create a more welcoming and engaging learning environment where students are excited to participate.\r\n\r\nWe use the rewards as part of our classroom behavior and goal-setting system. Students earn points for demonstrating responsibility, kindness, perseverance, and positive classroom behavior. Each week, students have the opportunity to exchange their points for items from the treasure box. One of my favorite moments was seeing students proudly celebrate reaching their goals after working hard for several weeks. The rewards have helped reinforce positive habits and encouraged students to stay focused on their learning.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, our students will continue setting personal and academic goals while practicing the positive behaviors that lead to success both inside and outside the classroom. Our hope is that these incentives help students develop strong habits that eventually become second nature, requiring less external motivation over time. After more than a year and a half of virtual learning, many students are still rebuilding their reading habits and rediscovering the joy of holding a book in their hands. For some students, independent reading became less of a priority as they relied heavily on screens and digital content.\r\n\r\nThe books you provided were selected based on student requests for athletes they admire and want to learn more about. Titles featuring Michael Jordan, Venus and Serena Williams, Alex Morgan, Patti McGee, and other inspiring individuals will help students connect with stories of perseverance, determination, and success. These books also provide opportunities for students to learn about diverse cultural and historical figures who have made a lasting impact.\r\n\r\nAlready, students are excited to see current and relevant books on our library shelves. Whether we are reviewing math concepts, practicing reading skills, or reinforcing lessons taught in class, the iPads have made learning more meaningful and effective for my students.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for the students is how interactive and hands-on the learning experience has become. The excitement on their faces when they successfully complete a lesson or master a skill has been truly rewarding to see.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who often need extra support have especially warmed up to this technology. Other students who struggle to stay focused during traditional review activities are now more engaged and motivated to complete tasks. While I have expertise, I do not have materials to ensure that the curriculum is translated in a manner that is accessible to all. My classroom is in a low-income community in Las Vegas, NV. I work in a Title 1 school. Our students come to school hungry, many wear the same clothes to school day after day, and many qualify for free lunches. Some of my students' parents do not speak English and every student in my class has autism spectrum disorder (ASD).\r\nI love what I do, I have spent my 28 years career working with people with ASD. Unfortunately, I left the classroom years ago. I am in the process of rebuilding a program. While the district provides a curriculum, the additional supports required to build a well-developed program are severely lacking. My administration made great efforts to provide materials, but students with intensive needs are specific in terms of what they require to learn and grow. While the general education population may tolerate puzzles and multicolored counters, for math, my students will also need large sized counters as some tend to mouth inedible materials – a choking hazard. Some students require counters that are themed based on preferred characters or animals in order to engage with them as their motivation to participate in academics or math specifically is low. Many of the students are working on attending skills, persistence – or the ability to remain on task for longer and longer periods, asking for breaks in the absence of eloping from their seats, and engaging in increasingly more challenging academic tasks. They learn to do these things by earning reinforcement, rewards for their efforts. It takes great effort to sit and work as hard as they do. These students are often confused, frustrated, tired, and struggle to make even the smallest gains. They are learning how to act like students, before anything else. The time and effort I ask of them, feels monumental.\r\nThe materials that you have provided helps them to engage in a manner that feels safe, familiar and comfortable. While they are in kindergarten and first grade, they are oftentimes, developmentally delayed. As educators, we meet them where they are. Playing with items such as kitchen pots and pans, like in preschool, scooping kinetic sand with ice-cream scoopers and making academics feel like play. The more fun we have, the less opposition to the work. The less opposition, the more engagement and learning takes place.\r\nThe materials that Donors Choose has provided helped me to begin building a productive, safe and engaging classroom for a special group of children. We are slowly building a wonderful classroom for children that deserve to learn and grow, just like everybody else. This takes a lot of time, effort and specific materials and expertise.\r\nThank you to all of our donors for providing my students and staff some of the items we need to build an exciting, fun, and captivating place.","fullyFundedDate":1769177564020,"projectUrl":"project/autism-classroom-reaches-for-the-sky/10000913/","projectTitle":"Autism Classroom Reaches for the Sky","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Ben Zvi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10399832"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_56257","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":506,"numTeachers":45,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":64,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":51.7,"schoolId":56257,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jack Dailey Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jack Dailey Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/nevada/clark-county-school-district/jack-dailey-elementary-school/56257"}
