Having a recorder for every 5th grade student, additional books to share with the kids, new percussion instruments, and a parachute have enriched our class so much this year. The new books, percussion instruments, and parachute have made for exciting lessons. Specifically with the recorders, it's been so exciting to see how they take ownership of their learning. They're excited, they push themselves, and they're always wanting to learn newer and harder songs. It's inspiring to see them grow so much in one school year. During our first art center activity, students immediately gravitated toward the Crayola Colors of Kindness crayons and Bold and Bright construction paper, creating vibrant drawings that reflected their own experiences and identities. They were proud to share their work with classmates, and I noticed that students who are usually hesitant to participate were excited to contribute.\r\n\r\nThe soft pencils and Fiskars scissors have also made a big difference in developing fine motor skills. Students can now focus on precision and control during writing and cutting activities without frustration. Our dry erase boards and cleaning spray have kept materials clean and reusable, which encourages experimentation and risk-taking without worrying about making mistakes.\r\n\r\nOne favorite moment was when a student carefully blended pastel crayons to illustrate a story about their family traditions—this sparked a classroom discussion about cultural pride and creativity, showing that these supplies do more than support art—they support identity, expression, and community.\r\n\r\nNext, we plan to integrate these supplies into our writing and storytelling lessons, where students will illustrate their own narratives to complement first-grade reading and writing TEKS. By combining art with literacy, students will strengthen both their academic skills and self-expression, creating a richer, more inclusive learning experience.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, our classroom has become a place where every student feels valued, inspired, and empowered to explore, create, and succeed.","fullyFundedDate":1757526906335,"projectUrl":"project/from-crayons-to-confidence-a-classroom/9411121/","projectTitle":"From Crayons to Confidence: A Classroom Transformation","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kelly Hilburn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6604868_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1594334824506","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6604868"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_14207","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":735,"numTeachers":48,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":19,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":61,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.6,"schoolId":14207,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jack C Binion Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jack C Binion Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/birdville-independent-school-district/jack-c-binion-elementary-school/14207"}
