They observed lunar craters and other heavenly bodies in the evening during our afterschool program. Watching middle schoolers understand that a tiny drop of water and the vast moon are both in their \"neighborhood\" was an awesome breakthrough.\r\n\r\nThe energy was electrifying when the boxes arrived. A student whispered, \"Are we really going to use this?\" When they first saw the heavenly bodies through a telescope or caught a glimpse of a living cell, the room erupted. They were not looking at a textbook anymore; they were looking at reality.\r\n\r\nYour gift did not just buy equipment; it gave my students the identity of a scientist. They are so excited about the vibrant colors in the books. \r\n\r\nBefore reading the books, we do picture walks through the books starting with the cover. It made a tremendous impact on the Reading Bowl program at our school. The students read the vibrant up to date books with so much enthusiasm. You can see their eyes light up when they open the books with the words jumping off the page. Once the students have finished reading they are able to communicate with their classmates and express the theme of the story. Students are actively engaged in reading and answering thought provoking questions about what they read. \r\n When we add the buzzers to the mix it comes alive for the students.
