I teach at a high-poverty middle school in Georgia. The students in my classroom are diagnosed with autism. They are bright, talented, and fascinating individuals whom are often misunderstood due to communication and social deficits. The students in my classroom have many abilities. They are able to read, write, speak, and even socialize (believe it or not!). However, they tend to have a very short attention span and need minimal distractions during instruction or they can become easily frustrated or may resort to their "own world." That is why having a distraction-free (or at least almost distraction-free) environment is important.
