We use it to teach and identify numbers. I remember when I created an instructional math matching folder with objects and numbers and my students loved it. It's an effective and fun way to introduce one-to-one correspondence. One-to-one correspondence means you can point to each object as you say its number, making sure every object gets a number and every number you say matches an object. \r\n\r\nOne-to-one correspondence is a key concept that helps little ones truly understand numbers and how to count. It means they learn to point to each item and say one number for each item, without skipping or repeating any. This skill is crucial for helping them grasp the actual quantity that numbers represent. They also develop communication and social skills. Partners had to work together to find out what was and wasn't working and make changes to their builds. We have a courtyard with very little fun to be had during recess...until now! The students raised monarch butterflies in the classroom and learned how important the milkweed plant is for their survival. They planted milkweed in pots after cold stratifying the seeds. They took care of the plants all year. They made a presentation to one of our business partners, who helped us with the fundraiser. Not only did we earn money for our school because of this project, but we also created more monarch food and habitats by planting more milkweed! Students also planted three new pollinator flower beds in our garden to attract a variety of pollinating insects to our gardens where we are growing food that requires pollination. They learned to grow flowers, harvest the seeds, and make seed paper. Then they did experiments with the seed paper to see what conditions it takes to help it grow. We're still working on it! We planted some in the greenhouse in the winter that did not germinate, so now we're trying again since the weather is warm. The students asked almost daily if they could come back and make more paper. The teamwork that developed from the assembly-line style of work was great. Kids all had a job and they saw how their job contributed to the final product. Then they got to see how important technique is! Sometimes the paper didn't make the right shape, or they held the frame upside down, or it was too little or too much pulp. They got to see how critique and revision are important because if the paper wasn't done correctly, it wasn't usable.
