While painting today, a student said, \"I actually really like this. I've painted before, but not with real paint.\" He was referring to the fact that this painted project used permanent, exterior paint, and that's because the project is real and will be placed outside for people to use. It is a project that truly matters. He was able to apply his knowledge of painting to a new situation for a new purpose, and that is huge. The kids talked about what books to share inside, how to package some seeds from our garden to add to it, and where to place it so that everyone can reach it. \r\n\r\nOur final step is to plant some beautiful flowers in the planter box, and mount the library outside. The community that will access this library is one that has recently suffered the closing of their public library due to a fire. It only recently opened, and it is still just about a mile from our school. This will allow faster, closer access to books for our immediate neighbors. Students also looked at examples of other free libraries online and saw that hygiene and other care items can also be shared inside. They have noticed many without homes around the neighborhood and thought we could offer things like toothpaste and cleaning wipes for those who may need it.
