At the beginning of the year, I always spend a lot of time going over how to use the classroom materials responsibly and safely. The books are perfect for these lessons because they're both funny and relatable. For example, we use dry-erase markers to do problems on their individual whiteboards, and my students always need reminders to put the cap back on the marker correctly. Inevitably, some do not and then complain that their marker doesn't work! After reading the book on markers, I just have to let them know their markers \"may go on strike\" (as in the book), and my students laugh and remember to be more responsible about their materials. My students loved listening to them as I read them and were excited to hear the next one. Now they love checking them out from the classroom bookshelf and reading them at home with their families. Another student has been enjoying the Chewy Tubes, especially because other fidgets we used in the past weren't meant for chewing and would break. It was such a treat to have these materials for our special projects throughout the year. The students loved the experience of working with different materials. They were so excited to color on the velvet posters, which had the Dia de Los Muertos skulls on them to go with them paragraphs they wrote on that holiday. For Christmas, students decorated the paper frames, added a photograph and we turned them into ornaments for families, which the families loved. They were so excited to decorate their own reusable canvas bags after we learned about Earth Day. And on Mother's Day, the students shrieked when I showed them the canvases they were going to paint on to create a gift for their mothers. Most of them had never painted on a canvas before and they commented on how fun it was. These materials definitely added a special touch to the different celebrations throughout the year! The math manipulatives have been so useful. The students loved using the mini clocks to help them learn to tell time. After my students watched me manipulate the hands on my big teacher clock, they were able to do the same on their own personal clock, which I feel really helped them understand how the hands on a clock work. It's especially tricky to tell time to the half hour, but the mini clocks definitely helped them understand the concept better. Another first grade standard is to memorize their number facts up to 10 and we've been playing a lot of different card games with the decks of cards we received. The students are much more engaged and it's even more effective since they are solving a lot more problems than what a simple worksheet would provide.
