A student who is dysregulated cannot access learning, no matter how engaging the lesson is. That's why this grant matters so deeply: it doesn't just add supplies to my classroom, it gives my students a pathway back to themselves so they can stay present, connected, and ready to grow.\r\n\r\nThe sand and putty you funded have already become quiet anchors in our day. When a student's hands are moving and their senses are engaged, I watch their breathing slow and their focus return. These simple tools are helping children ground themselves in their bodies, so instead of stepping out of the classroom during hard moments, they can stay with their peers and keep learning alongside them.\r\n\r\nThe weighted blankets and weighted creatures have brought something I didn't expect: a visible sense of physical relief on children's faces. For students whose nervous systems are often on high alert, that gentle, consistent pressure offers a felt sense of safety that words alone cannot provide. It's remarkable how something so simple can help a child feel secure enough to fully participate in their day.\r\n\r\nOur new conversation starters have sparked something wonderful, real, reciprocal dialogue between students who might not otherwise find an easy way to connect. I've watched children who tend to keep to themselves light up when given a structured, low-pressure way to talk with a classmate. These small exchanges are building the foundation for genuine friendships and stronger peer relationships across our classroom community.\r\n\r\nThe Expo markers might seem like a small addition, but they have opened up a world of creative expression for my students. Whether they're solving a math problem, illustrating an idea, or simply doodling their thinking, students light up when they get to share their work on the whiteboard in front of their classmates. That moment of standing up and showing what they know builds a kind of confidence and ownership over their learning that is hard to replicate any other way.\r\n\r\nAnd the comfortable pillows have quietly become one of the most-used items in our room. Having a soft, inviting space near me and their classmates gives students a place to regroup and re-center without ever missing a beat of instruction. They can take the moment they need without stepping away from the community, and that matters enormously for both their learning and their sense of belonging.","fullyFundedDate":1723142327895,"projectUrl":"project/calm-in-our-bodies-ready-to-learn/8564155/","projectTitle":"Calm in Our Bodies & Ready to Learn","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Kate Bachtel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7691733_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y304&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1691203602322","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7691733"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_56159","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":369,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":18,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":82,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":7,"gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":60.4,"schoolId":56159,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Horizons K-8 School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Horizons K-8 School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/boulder-valley-sch-dist-re-2/horizons-alternative-charter-school/56159"}
