It has been wonderful to have our new space, and even better to have it looking like one.\r\nWe have informative posters that the students have learned to reference when they don't know a musical symbol or term, and that has also been helpful and educational. We do provide instruments, but don't have additional funds for shoulder rests. This is crucial to learning the proper holding and playing of these instruments.\r\n\r\nThe students have been very excited to borrow a shoulder rest for their instrument! Students started off learning about the basics of DNA and solving some decoded secret messages. They completed an in class reading challenge and then were given a cypher chart linked to amino acids to decode their own names. We are continuing to learn more about DNA basics, they will go into more detail in high school. \r\n\r\nAll students were able to take the DNA cypher code and create a molecule of DNA with their initials. The money provided here gave us enough supplies that each student successfully embroidered a molecule! We glued our fabric embroidery cloth onto a wooden backed circle to make an ornament. Some students hung their DNA in our hallway and many wanted to bring them home to show family. \r\n\r\nStudents who have never threaded a needle or sewn learned a new skill. Each student was able to make their own project and learned to embroider. The overwhelming feedback from all students was that they loved it. They enjoyed relaxing with a needle and thread and using their creative brains. A few students were frustrated at times but overcame it and had a good time. Throughout the project students commented how much fun they were having and how excited they were to participate. Not one student didn't work, every single person worked on a project for a 100% participation rate.\r\n\r\nYou helped more than 100 students in the 7th grade get excited about science. This will encourage them to take more science classes in later grades. The supplies will last for years into the future with only small contributions from our class budget to replace fabric, needles etc. Thank you for donating to this project that started as a crazy idea in my head.","fullyFundedDate":1737649891189,"projectUrl":"project/decorative-nucleic-acid-dna-embroidery-p/9075798/","projectTitle":"Decorative Nucleic Acid-DNA Embroidery Project","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Robert","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1636403_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1449077072479","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/freedmanscience"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_33232","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":485,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":28,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":67,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":70.5,"schoolId":33232,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hillside Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hillside Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/utah/salt-lake-city-school-district/hillside-middle-school/33232"}
