The materials and educational kits I am requesting will be used to provide dozens of hands-on activities for my 8th grade students. In our Energy Unit, my students will be comparing seismic, sound, light, and heat energy waves. For each type of energy wave, they will engage in individual, pair and group activities, labs, and experiments. These activities, labs, and experiments will take place inside the classroom as well as outdoors so students make real-world connections. The materials and educational kits will be used for 4 weeks of Energy Projects. Each week, we will focus on one form of energy. "Seismic" week includes me introducing seismic waves and doing labs using the Plate Tectonics Earth Science Video Lab, students using Slinkies to understand how waves propagate, and students working together to build earthquake simulators. "Sound" week includes using a computer lab to understand how we hear and a station-based lab where students use different materials, for example, tuning forks, straws, and rubber bands to understand how the matter of the medium changes the sound. "Light" week includes activities using flashlights, black lights, creating rainbows with water and mirrors, and UV detection using UV beads. "Heat" week includes doing experiments on convection, radiation, and conduction using heat lamps, hot chocolate, and glow sticks. Also, students make solar ovens and cook their favorite food. Students can write down thoughts and questions on their white boards, materials will be stored in the bins, and students will wear goggles during labs for safety. I am committed to creating engaging activities for my students. These lessons are designed to encourage students from all academic levels to participate and learn from real-world experiences. With your help, our classroom will be a busy, engaging, fun, and safe learning environment!
