A few weeks before your donation came through, our snacks from last year finally ran out. My students were overjoyed to know that we are now restocked for the rest of the school year and that missing breakfast won't lead to feeling hungry all day. Even some students who are sensitive about coming to reading class for extra help are visiting my room unprompted for a snack to help them through their day.\r\n\r\nIn my class, students work on the foundational literacy skills that will help them be successful readers and writers for the rest of their academic career (and life!). I diagnose and fill in their gaps in phonics, spelling, reading fluency, and more. These are crucial skills to any child, but the urgency of addressing these needs for a student who is already in middle school cannot be overstated. Students grab a snack as soon as they arrive, which helps them settle in, refocus, and transition from the school day into after-school learning or club time. One immediate impact we noticed was during after-school support time—students were more engaged, patient, and willing to ask for help once their basic needs were met.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the snacks and water, their reactions said it all. Many expressed genuine excitement and gratitude, with several students commenting on how helpful it was to have something to eat after a long school day. For some, this snack is what carries them through 1-2 more hours of learning and enrichment. It also created a more welcoming, community-centered environment where students feel cared for and supported.\r\n\r\nWith this need addressed, students can now focus more fully on their after-school goals, including completing assignments, participating in enrichment activities, and building important academic and social skills. These resources continue to support their growth by removing barriers to learning and ensuring all students can participate. Being able to do many labs with micropipettes, Eppendorf tubes, hot plates, and various chemicals felt like a given. However, from my experience as a teacher, this is not the case across all schools. \r\n\r\nAs a new building, we have gratefully accepted equipment donations over the years, gradually accumulating the same equipment that is readily available in some other schools. This year, with sufficient heavy equipment, we have been able to start an AP Biology program. \r\n\r\nAs an intensive lab course, I am grateful for your contributions which enabled the purchase of consumable supplies for individual labs. In my classroom, we used the wooden blocks to create inquiry cubes. Students practiced making observations and inferences by using clues on each side of the inquiry cube to guess the design of the mystery side. Students used the portable scales and magnetic water models during a water-on-a-penny lab to investigate hydrogen bonding, a property that makes water so important for life. This lab was also a hit with younger children during a family STEM outreach night organized by our school's science department. Students used glucose for two labs: 1) using amylase to investigate the breakdown of complex sugars such as starch into simple sugars into glucose, and 2) investigating the properties of selectively permeable membranes by determining the concentration mystery glucose solution inside a dialysis tube. \r\n\r\nMost recently, I was able to use the pocket scales to prepare catalase solution. During this lab, students investigated how pH or temperature affected the reaction rate of catalase in breaking down hydrogen peroxide. This lab made use of all of our donated equipment - hot plates, micropipettes and tips, Eppendorf tubes, universal indicator, beakers, and graduated cylinders. During this experience, students were taught the entire process of scientific inquiry - from doing background research to making a hypothesis, to carrying out the lab, to graphing the data, and finally communicating results. To capture the entire process, students were taught to write a formal scientific paper. \r\n\r\nMost importantly, AP Biology in my school is open to all students regardless of prior knowledge, past experiences, or English language ability. This is different from tracking models where students are selected into an AP course. We have a large population of highly-driven multilingual learners who are able to access college-level content and experience industry-level lab techniques. When given visual and experiential learning opportunities, we can support both content and language development among our multilingual learners. We've been doing this for several years now, but we completed making these baskets with record timing (under 1 hour!) Today, Tuesday, November 25th, we were able to give away all the baskets directly to families in our school community.\r\n\r\nFor our students, this project is more than handing out food.
