As we unpacked everything together, the classroom immediately filled with smiles and comments like, \"They got Slim Jims?!\" and \"Yes! Fruit snacks are my favorite!\" Students were especially excited about the variety, such as fruit snacks, Goldfish, Rice Krispies treats, granola bars, crackers, and Slim Jims, which quickly became the most talked about items in the room. Something as simple as having choices made students feel special and cared for during a stressful testing week.\r\n\r\nWe passed out snacks during testing breaks throughout all four MCAS exams. Testing days are long and mentally exhausting, so having snacks available helped students stay focused, energized, and motivated. One moment that stood out was seeing students carefully save their favorite snack for after a difficult section of the test because they said it gave them \"something to look forward to.\" Another student came in nervous one morning and immediately smiled when he saw the basket of snacks waiting for the class.\r\n\r\nThe snacks also helped create a calmer and more positive atmosphere during MCAS week. Students were so genuinely appreciative that people they had never met wanted to support them. It turned what can feel like a stressful week into something that felt encouraging and community-centered.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, students are building on the perseverance and focus they showed during testing. We are continuing our work in reading comprehension, writing, and discussion skills, and students are already setting goals for their own academic growth. As early as 9th grade, we not only looked into microscopes, but also learned to set them up. Unfortunately, these opportunities are not universal across the country. I am writing to express deep gratitude for your contribution, which enabled me to provide my students an opportunity to access high-level science instruction.\r\n\r\nThis year, all at my current school are taking AP Biology. This curriculum shift opened rigorous, college-level work to all students regardless of ability or English language proficiency. Recently, our school receive a donation of undergraduate-grade microscopes from a local university. This enabled students to transition away from standard school microscopes and learn to use more complex equipment. Students learned to properly set up and focus the microscope on onion root tip slides. Under the microscope, students were able to observe each step of mitosis as well as cytokinesis. \r\n\r\nGrowing up, looking at onion root tips under a microscope was a classic biology lab. However, without your contribution, making this experience available to my students would not have been possible. Previously, many of my English Learners would spend the first 15 minutes of a task just trying to decipher the \"setup\" of a word problem. Now, they pick up their tools and get to work immediately.\r\n\r\nI've watched students who used to stay silent during group work now use the translator to check their phrasing before confidently explaining a geometric proof to their peers.
