Our school primarily serves students in the surrounding Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury and Dorchester, many of whom qualify for free and reduced lunch and face challenges outside of school. We are also an inclusive school, meaning that students with learning disabilities and those identified as English Language Learners are included in general education classrooms. My students are an excited bunch, new to the middle school experience and finding their way in a new community. Many are reluctant readers who currently test at several grades below 6th grade. One of the goals of our English/Humanities department is to bring in these students, creating strong independent readers in each of our classes who will show greater stamina in both their reading and writing. One way to accomplish this is by finding high-interest books to teach as part of our yearly curriculum.
