They immediately began imagining what they could make, asking questions, sharing ideas, and eagerly waiting for their turn to begin. These materials have given students a chance to step away from the screen and create with their hands—to squeeze, roll, build, reshape, and discover that mistakes can often become part of something even better.\r\n\r\nWe have been using the new resources to create small sculptures inspired by things that are meaningful to each student, including favorite animals, special objects, and personal memories. It has been especially rewarding to watch students who are sometimes hesitant with drawing or painting find confidence in clay. There is something special about seeing a student hold up a piece they made and say, \"LOOK!\" The glazes have added another layer of excitement, as students see how color can help bring their work to life.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to finish adding details and textures, glaze the ceramic pieces, and reflect on the choices students made as artists. We will share our finished work with one another and celebrate the imagination, patience, and perseverance that went into every piece. Students learn to edit images, make choices about color, contrast, composition, and size, and revise their work until it communicates what they want to say. The award-winning artwork and AP Art and Design 2-D photographs I submitted show the pride and skill students develop through this process.\r\n\r\nStudents are most excited when they see a digital image become a large, professional-looking print that can fill a wall and start a conversation. The combined-image piece I shared allowed a student to make a bold visual statement that would not have had the same impact at a smaller size. This technology is especially meaningful for students who connect through photography, graphic design, and visual storytelling. With the Chompsaw, they built a guitar, a Wreck-It Ralph arcade box, a camera, and a robot along with many other things. What I loved most was watching them figure things out as they went. They had to measure, cut, rethink, and sometimes start over, but they were excited to keep going because the ideas were their own. Seeing a student stand back and look at something they designed and built themselves is one of my favorite parts of teaching art. These projects gave them a chance to be creative, work with their hands, and realize that they really can turn an idea into something three-dimensional.\r\n\r\nThe little ones have been just as excited about working with Model Magic and air-dry clay. There is something special about putting clay in a child's hands and letting them discover what they can do with it. They learned how to use pinch, slab, and coil techniques, and they were so proud of the things they created. Some students were immediately comfortable with the clay, while others needed a little time to figure it out, but almost everyone was eager to keep experimenting. The room was full of students showing each other what they had made and asking what they could make next. We are using these tools to create relief and etched prints where students design an image, carefully carve it into a printing surface, ink it, and transfer the image onto paper. One memorable moment happened when a student pulled their very first successful print and realized that the lines they had carved by hand could be repeated again and again. Watching them understand how artists use process, patience, and craftsmanship to create multiples was incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new etching tools, their reactions were a mix of curiosity and excitement. Many of them had never seen professional printmaking tools before, and they were eager to learn how real artists create prints. The moment we opened the materials, students immediately began discussing ideas for images they wanted to carve—everything from stylized animals and fantasy symbols to graphic designs inspired by comics and games. Their excitement made it clear that having authentic tools instantly made the experience feel more meaningful and professional.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will continue refining their carving techniques while experimenting with different types of lines, textures, and compositions in their prints. Our next steps include layering colors, exploring more complex designs, and learning how artists edition their prints. Ultimately, students will build a small print portfolio that shows their growth in craftsmanship and creative thinking. We set aside one day and went over all of the different functions of the devices. We learned everyone's tuning note, the main tuning note, and what frequency to set it to.
