Each item that was donated by them is another tool that I can utilize to make my room a therapeutic area for the student to work through their challenges. It is so much fun to explore new resources, games, and materials with the students to progress though their feelings and behaviors to help them learn resiliency skills and it is only made possible through the generosity of these donations.\r\n\r\nThe students enjoy the tranquility and calming ability provided by the sand in the sand tray for play therapy. It can also be used therapeutically for students to create their own safe place in the sand. The sand tray has always been a hit, but as the sand gets used, it diminishes. Students were excited that more sand was available. \r\n\r\nHaving construction paper is a must for art therapy which allows students to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas in therapy. Student are so happy to have a variety of colors to choose from when asked to draw or write out ideas in session. It is often commented that it looks like a \"rainbow\" as they animatedly pick through the assortment of colors available. \r\n\r\nSnacks for the students is a great take away for the work they put in towards resiliency skills. Some students even enter the session hungry and having a variety of snacks for them to choose from is a delight as I see them smiling as they pick through to find what they want to choose during that session. I also appreciate having wipes to clean the area for each student. \r\n\r\nAs I have shown all of my students the donations I received they laugh and light up knowing that the request was made for them. It is truly appreciated what has been given to us. Some of the expressions were: \"Wow! You got some really good snacks!\" and \"There is so much to choose from!\" and my favorite, \"Thank you for getting these for us!\" Working at a Title One School, I know food is a desired resource for the students that I work with. The snacks are mainly used as an incentive to remind students that for their effort and work in the session, they will get to choose a treat at the end. Of course, when I have students who have entered a session hungry though, it provides fuel and readiness to begin our work. \r\nFor many of the students I work with, they are dealing daily with past or current trauma, trying to cope with life circumstances beyond their sphere of control, or have behaviors that are difficult for them to regulate on a consistent basis. Students know that when they enter my room, we are going to work towards their resiliency care plan goals and they have to be willing to recognize the difficult circumstances they are faced with or take accountability for their behavior so that changes can be made. When they get to leave the session and are thanked for their hard work, it comes as a bonus to get a treat! Best of all, the student do seem appreciative.\r\nKnowing the challenges my students endure can be difficult, especially when food resources can be one of those difficulties. I chose filling, healthy, and needed fuels to help my students be rewarded for their effort and have something to take away that makes them feel good both emotionally and physically. I hope to continue being able to get donations to help this cause.
