We received a wide range of goods to support our Writing Center and classroom endeavors, and all have been utilized greatly to make for a more positive learning environment.\r\n\r\nBetween the books, cleaning supplies, snacks, and work material, my students have been well-equipped to take on another school year. I have been able to feed students who may not have enough food at home, supply them with materials such as folders and pencils that they otherwise may not have had access to, and encourage them to pick up reading as a new hobby. \r\n\r\nAs the Writing Center becomes more and more established, we are in continuous need of supplies and support. Students are flooding the room and testing the boundaries of what we are capable of, and that is a challenge we welcome with open arms. We were able to use the standing mats and clipboards just in time for our financial literacy component of the College and Career Class lesson, Career Salaries. In this lesson, students have already identified which career that they think they would want to research, study, and pursue. However, the students of the class will factor their monthly incomes and will have to purchase the basic needs of everyday life to function to and from their work lives: Home, car, groceries, utilities, and fun (leisure). \r\n\r\nHow the materials came in handy was that the student's could move about freely in the classroom in order to purchase each aspect of this assignment using tv monitors and other infographics that served as a menu of choices. The standing mats were used at the counter spaces whereas the clipboards served as a writing surface for each student to calculate their salaries, by having to make sure they are keeping into account their budget for the month! \r\n\r\nContributions like yours helps in creating fun and engaging learning spaces for students in underserved communities and schools. The difficulties as a teacher and in particular, for our refugee and newly arrived students, which are under constant constraints in an already underserved community are facing another challenge. I tried advocating and speaking on the matter, but to no avail, the recent development is that my classroom is now being moved to a somewhat non visible section of the school building and into a room that is less than ideal for a vibrant learning classroom. Since my classroom is setup for a science class and I do not teach science, me and the students are being booted without any help or assistance. \r\n\r\nI heard of this news just days before the winter break. Coming back to the second semester, in January, the students and I will now have to spend the first few days cleaning and redecorating the room to make it a feasible learning space for us. This room has not been cleaned, nor updated with nice furnishings, includes a large humming (noise) circuit breaker, houses appliance components for the building, and has no windows. \r\n\r\nIf it is within your means, please be on the look out for another donors choose project fund request.
